Mac Mail automatically resizes windows sometimes...bug?

Thanks in advance for the help. I set my email window size the way I like and get tons of emails and I open and close them with no problem and the email window stays the same size, but every once in awhile, I get an email and when I open it, the window automatically resizes to a smaller size which causes all subsequent emails to stay that size until I stretch out the window again to the size I like...it is driving me nuts...is it a bug of some kind or is there a setting I can change so the window size always stays the same in Mail?

I can also confirm that it is not just emails from smartphones. Well, all 3 of us are in classic mode when it happens and the window is going to the lower left corner for all of us as well. Hopefully Apple will become aware of this bug at some point and fix it in an OS update. Not really a big deal, just annoying. Everytime it happens, I try for a few seconds to figure out what is happening to see if there is a way around the bug...if I learn anything, I will post back. Thanks all for the input.

Well, it is still happening. The only new possible pattern I have noticed is that, when it does happen, it seems to happen only when opening up the first email when I go into Mail. I never quit Mail, I just close the main window of Mail when I am done with a session so if I click on the already open Mail icon in the dock to put the Mail window on the screen again and then open up a mail, sometimes it will resize with that first email. It doesn't seem to happen again until I close the mail window and come back later and open up another "first" email and even then it doesn't always happen with that first email, but it doesn't seem to resize ever with anything but that "first" email. I am getting bored with this really silly problem and am about ready to just live with it, lol.

It is also still happening to me, maybe less frequently, so that when it does happen I am not noticing a pattern. I too leave Mail open almost all the time, just minimized. Maybe I'll try closing Mail at least once a day for a while.

I use Mail to read my gmail, rather than the gmail website. How about you?

Funny there are so few of us experiencing this annoyance. Or maybe bothered enough to seek a solution?

No, I rarely use my gmail account so I have it entered in Mac Mail but inactive...I am using me.com.

I thought maybe it had something to do with the computer going into sleep mode and then it happens when coming out of sleep, but I could not reproduce it. It is happening on 2 of my computers, a macbook air and a macbook pro.

The problem would probably be solved if we switched to the new mail format, but I just can't stand the new mail format, am attached to classic layout...guess I am a creature of habit. But I do like new mail format for my ipad and iphone, just not my computer. But alas, I might very well switch to new format if I am having a bad day and it happens again, lol.

It is probably just a bug that Apple will fix just before we need to upgrade to another OS with other bugs, lol.

Oh, also, another bug I am having with Mail in case this is related is with my Macbook Air...the mail sounds like the airplane swoosh and the bing when mail is received just disappear for no reason and could happen anytime, but restarting the computer solves that for awhile kind of like resizing the window back to the way I like it...it stays for a little while and then happens again. I don't know what causes that one either and can't reproduce it.

I can't believe I have spent this much time and written so much on this little bug, pretty embarrassing, sheesh! lol

Well, the mail sounds came back when I did this 10.8.2 update so hopefully that update also addressed the auto resize window problem, time will tell, crossing fingers.

This window resizing is still happening (all software on latest updates). It happens in both of my accounts (Exchange and gMail). It happens with seemingly any type of message (those sent form computers and/or phones).

But I did notice something today...it happened when I used the ENTER key to open the message (as opposed to double clicking the trackpad).

I never use the ENTER key to open an email message, but it still happens to me.

BTW, I did try closing Mail once a day for a while, but it didn't seem to make any difference.

The resizing to a much smaller window is so random and so occasional that I'll even forget about it sometimes, and can see no pattern. If it ever quits happening, I may not even notice it!

jdag and sarahfromranchos,

It is still happening to me as well. And, disregard my previous post because my mail sounds disappeared again so software updates did not change a thing. I never use the ENTER key either to open mail, but I am sure the resizing would continue even if I did. And I too see no pattern when the resizing happens.

I wanted to post a screenshot below of my preference settings in mail so you can compare (and I also disabled grouping by conversation using the view menu in mail). To try for a solution, I am going to just uncheck the "Use classic layout" checkbox only which, with my settings, will allow my mail to really act the same way as classic layout with the exception of a slight change in the look of my emails in a list. I will still be able to double click an email in the list to open a new window showing the individual email and it will look the same as classic. It will be interesting to see if the resizing stops with this simple setting change. I can live with it if it does. Time will tell and I will check in after awhile to let you know if it solved it.

Well, the experiment worked for a couple of days and I started to believe, but then WHAM, BAM, SLAM...3 windows resized in the space of about 10 minutes....and it has happened again a few more times so my solution did not work. I am going to set it back to Classic Layout, oh well.

I can also now "manually" reproduce. I did what sarahfromranchos suggested and printed an email. I then closed it and re-opened, and it did in fact open in a small window in the bottom left corner.

I do not have a Canon printer, and would not expect that this has anything to do with the specific printer make/model.

At least now there is some explanation for what appeared to be randomness.

Holy Smokes, good work Sarahfromranchos! I can also reproduce it so it is indeed time to report it to Apple. My printer is an HP Officejet 6500 so printer is not the issue, looks like the software.

And, I have also discovered some additional info about the bug to make it more user-friendly for us until they fix it: When you select an email to print, the usual printer dialogue box comes up. If you look at the screenshot below that I took from this printer dialogue window, the window will move and resize according to what you have selected there. Each selection will cause the next email window you open to move to the lower left of the screen but the window will be resized in a different way based on your selection; however, the radio button you see selected in my paste does not cause the window to auto-resize, it just moves the window to the lower left. The other radio buttons cause the window to move AND resize. So, if you leave the printing setting as it is shown in the paste below, when the bug happens, you just have to move the window back to the position you like on the screen instead of also having to resize it back to the way you like.

Another observation: you don't have to actually print a page to get the bug, you can just select print and then cancel the print dialogue box and you still get the bug.

As far as reporting this bug so Apple is aware, I am not exactly sure where to go for this...do you know?

Thanks again!
