My new macbook pro retina randomly goes into standby mode. I have to close the screen and wait a few seconds and re-open it in order for it to come back on.

Sometimes it immediately goes back into standby mode again after closing and reopening the screen. I have checked the battery level everytime, and it has never been below 40% when this occurs. Is this a Mountain Lion issue?

I do not have a solution.  Just wanted to chime in that mine started doing the same thing yesterday, about 2 weeks into ownership.  Put Mountain Lion on it immediately when i got it.

I had a similar problem, but it was not actually going into standby mode it just looked like it.  I had my screensaver set to [a custom folder of] Pictures and it doesn't seem to work.  So after the Screensaver timeout of 5 minutes, it would go black and require password to come back on.

I guess I should add that it does it while i am using the computer. I have been in the middle of typing and it will go into stand by.

Are you guys browsing with google chrome?  I can't be for certain, but it seems that almost every time it does this (once a day maybe less) i'm browsing with chrome.

Yeah, I'm using Chrome too, but how this could be related to problem...

I hope, that Apple makes patch for this issue.

I'm having the same issue. When it happens I touch the track pad, sign in, and am going again. The R MBP sleeps while I'm working. I'm on a 2nd (and 3rd) display and mostly on those, not so much on my main display. Any others on multple displays? (one out of the mini display port/thunderbolt (to mini displayport to DVI adapter) and one out of USB to evga UV Plus 19.

Same here - it's just started happening in the past few days.  I'll be working on it, using chrome and/or imovie, and the screen will just black out.  When I hit a key it'll come back but it's lost the network connection, so I'm fairly sure it's going to sleep.  Geez...

    Well I fixed my problem.

I took it into the Apple store. Even without the other two monitors they were able to recreate the problem. One symptom (I had) was that one of the Hot Corners was set to Disable screen saver. If you then put your cursor there, you'd go into screen saver mode. Change the setting to another corner and the problem follows you there.

The Apple person at the Genius bar logged out as me and back in as test and same problem. He tried some stuff and finally said I needed to wipe the drive and reinstall the OS (Lion). I'd only had the machine for 12 hours and had just migrated my data to it, so I didn't mind doing that. I did it at home.

    Problem solved.

BUT... then I reinstalled the driver for my EVGA UV Plus 19 (most current drivers) and bingo problem back. Uninstall. Problem gone. I'm now using mini display port to DVI for one monitor and HDMI for the other I think the machine is a bit warmer this way (versus using a USB to the EVGA device) but at least it's not sleeping all the time. Someone might say "it (the heat) is your imagination" or something else. Or someone might say "use the other thunderbolt port for another mini-display port to DVI" but I need that for the LAN... c'est la vie.

Maybe I'll write to evga and see what they say. Maybe they'll fix their driver and/or Apple will fix it.

This started happening to me today as well (has happened twice). I am not using Chrome nor multiple displays.

Machine is not hot, mouse was nowhere near any hot corners.

The only thing new today is that I agreed to let adobe flash update itself. (?)

I am having the problem, too.  I got my Retina in late August, and the problem only started occuring about a week or two ago.  It happens so infrequently that I cannot see a pattern.  It definitely is going to sleep since the wireless has to reconnect when it comes back on.  I do not use Chrome, and I have no extra video drivers loaded (that I know of).  It happens both when I am using MSWord and Safari or Mail.  Since it happens infrequently and since I expect Apple will fix the bug eventually, I plan to live with it.  But it's annoying, and if it happens more often, I'll need to do something.

It's helpful to know that it happens on other than Retina machines.  It would be even more helpful if you could be more specific about which Macbook Pro you have.

I have been trying to suss out a pattern in the behavior, but it seems to be random.  If there's an underlying logic to when my MBPR puts itself to sleep, I have yet to discern it.  This thread has been dormant for awhile, and I wonder if others who have reported this problem have found a solution or just resigned themselves to live with it.
