My new macbook pro retina randomly goes into standby mode

My new macbook pro retina randomly goes into standby mode. I have to close the screen and wait a few seconds and re-open it in order for it to come back on.

Sometimes it immediately goes back into standby mode again after closing and reopening the screen. I have checked the battery level everytime, and it has never been below 40% when this occurs. Is this a Mountain Lion issue?

Mine does this too. This is my 2nd Retina, the first one it happened at least 3x per day. MBPr #2 is starting to do it almost everyday not to mention the fan comes on all the time and is incredibly loud. I'm really starting to regret upgrading, I never had any problems wiht my old MBP and snow leopard.

My 15" MBPR is about two months old. Came with MtLion, and stated having the same problem about a month ago. I was in a meeting yesterday, showing everyone various PDFs on my mac, and it seemed that everytime I rotated my computer so that they could see, it would go black, and wake up rather slowly.

The first few times, I had been grabbing it by the upper corner of the screen and rotating it, so they I started rotating it by the base, and it still turned black.

I don't have Chrome installed. It was very frustrating.

I just found a tip on another forum. They were talking about how MBPs can go to sleep if you place something with a magnet on the palm rest. I have noticed this with my iPhone and they said that iPad placed on top of the palm rest can also cause that problem.

I was at a jobsite (I am an architect), and using my Booq sleeve underneath my MBP, to keep it clean. As I rotated my MBP, it would shift slightly on the Booq sleeve. The Booq sleeve has a built-in magnet that keeps it closed around the MBP. I guess when I was rotating my MBP, it was passing over the magnet and going to sleep. That would explain why it was totally random.

I also have this problem. I have a Macbook pro non retina mid 2012 and I think it started after installing Mountain Lion. I called apple support twice or three times, I don't remember exactly, I already installed all the updates with patches that they released so far, resetted SMC, reinstalled Mountain Lion and nothing. The only good thing is that it doesn't happen so often. Anybody knows if there will be a new update for mountain lion soon?

THIS SOLVED MY ISSUE.

I've been using my late-2013 MBP 13" Retina since shortly after it was available for sale. No problems at all until today, when I was out and about and was resting the computer on top of my Snugg sleeve (some cheapy thing from Amazon). The display kept going black, and I had to hit shift over and over to wake it up, at which point I was prompted for my password.

I read your post, put the sleeve aside, and the computer has putted along just fine. THANKS!

I'm having the same symptom on a macbook pro retina 13" with an external monitor and bluetooth mouse. Log of the most recent event says:

I was typing with my palms resting or bumping on the touchpad when the screen went dark. It happens to me maybe once or twice a day. Today I decided to "track" it down, since it causes a break in concentration and about a 5 second delay. I am going to try disabling the sleep corner on the theory that my palm is causing the touchpad to move the mouse pointer to the sleep corner. Pity, I like sleep corners.
