Use cmd/⬆/4 (All held down at same time) to take snap of any part of screen

It changes the mouse curser to a target (with coordinates) which you can drag across any part of the screen to take a .jpg image saved to your desktop

cmd/⬆/3 to take full screen image

You can also use QuickTime to record your screen to a .mov movie

Simply launch QT go to the File menu . Select New Screen Recording and a small widget is launch allowing you to record the screen or just a small part

There is no need for those third party applications as its all built in to OSx out the box.

I also use Command Shift 4 for simple window captures. It is especially handy when you press the space bar and get the Camera cursor which will capture whatever window it's over without manually dragging a selection box.

However, I don't think it will capture a full browser window (scrolling window) that is bigger than the screen.

It's sometimes better if you can get the full page in one image rather than, window shot 1, scroll, window shot 2, scroll, window shot 3, etc. (Then paste and merge in a Photo editing App. 😐 )

Hi Keith,

It doesn't have to be a movie. Snagit, for example can capture the complete browser window as an image which you can then save as a png, jpg, tiff, gif, bmp or snagit document. That's what I thought the OP wanted so I didn't suggest the built in screen captures.

Take care,

ivan

(To Philo9, I saved this with 80% quality, so it's not the best. You can save as full quality, png or tiff to get better than this. Click on it to see it full size.)
