setting PRIMARY outgoing Mail Server

i have nine emails from my primary domain, one from a secondary domain, a gmail account and a me.com account.

i am having problems with email (cannot connect to domain name) and i am trying to verify that my outgoing server settings are correct. can someone help me here. it appears that i have to get into an /individual/ email account and at which point i have an option to select SMTP server?! this then pulls up the /first/ image which shows a primary server.

How do i change this primary account?! Do i "simply" enter all new information for each and every email account and change the primary outgoing server for each and every email address?!

How do i /set/ the primary server for an /individual/ account? Do i have to enter a new outgoing primary server for each and every email account/

Do i have to enter a USER NAME that is the same as my email account name each time i enter an outgoing server?

What is the purpose of the ON and OFF buttons for the "Other SMTP Server" accounts listed?

Do i keep the GMAIL outgoing server ON? or "on" only for the GMAIL account?

I am uber confused here and am hoping for some clarification...

THANKS.

i got to Settings > Mail Contacts and Calendars and at the bottom of the Mail section i can select "Default Account" as my GMAIL account.

then what do i do?

1. can i set a default SMTP outgoing server?

2. do i have to use the gmail smtp for the gmail account and the mail.domainname.com smtp for each of my domain name based emails? me.com smtp for me.com email address...?

thanks

hi. fantastic. thank you.

i am having a couple of problems from what i can see.

1. i cannot figure out how to delete a listed SMTP server such as those shown in the first image. if i tap on one i am not seeing a delete or an edit option.

2. there is an option to turn off the "Other SMTP servers". do i have to go into /each/ i have like 10 domain based email addresses and /EDIT/ the "Primary Server" so that it reflects the correct SMTP for /that/ email address? i mean, is this entry in this section particular to that individual email that i selected? if so, does it require my entering the actual email address for that account under "User"? if so, i wonder if it would not be simpler for me at this point to forward the email from 9 of the accounts into one of the accounts and just set up /one/ of these domain based emails on the phone. i'm sure this will have drawbacks that i haven't anticipated but it would be nice to just enter one SMTP server for each domain (google, website1, website2, me.com)...

thoughts?

THANKS!

You cannot delete a secondary SMTP server if it is the primary server for any account. That's why you can't delete most of them.

You need to edit the primary account to use the correct SMTP server for that account. Tap on the Primary server and change the fields to the correct server. Do this for each email account you have on the phone. After you are done none of the primary servers should be cwmx.com. Then you can delete the redundant ones.

It would be nice if there were a way to change them with a dropdown, but you have an unusual situation; Normally when you set up an account the first time the correct SMTP server gets inserted. I don't see how you got into this situation in the first place. I suspect that when the accounts were created there was no SMTP server defined for them, so the iPhone put in the only one it knew, cwmx.com.

Well, first, you only need one copy of each server. cwmx.com is AT&T's SMTP server, and will only work when you are on cellular data; it will not work over WiFi. So start by deleting all cwmx.com servers except the first. cwmx.com should not have a user ID or password.

When you send mail the iPhone first tries to send using the primary SMTP server. If that fails or times out, it tries the secondary servers in the order listed. cwmx.com is a last resort server; most people don't need it at all; it is only needed if your ISP does not relay mail from outside of its network.

For each mail server that you interact with the Primary SMTP server should be the one for that server. The Primary server should never be cwmx.com. So for the universaljointdesign.com account the primary server should be mail.universaljointdesign.com, and you should enter your user ID and password. The secondary should be cwmx.com, and you should turn off all of the other SMTP servers for that account. Further, if mail.universaljointdesign.com does not require that you be within the site firewall when sending you don't even need cwmx.com enabled.

For the gmail account the SMTP server should be smtp.gmail.com, and that's the only one that needs to be on. You will need to enter your full gmail address as ID and your gmail password. If you have 2 factor authentication enabled for gmail you will have to generate a single use password.

Default Account has nothing to do with SMTP servers. The Default Account is the account that will be used to send email from another app - for example, if you take a photo and choose to send it by email that is the account that will be used. When the email is generated you can select a different account to use if you don't want to use the default account

hi lawrence.

if i go into settings > mail contacts and calendars i can select an /individual/ email account. i can then select the smtp section. however, if i go into this section i have a PRIMARY account listed for this email address and /most/ of these show cwmx.com.

i can turn this PRIMARY account ON or OFF.

IS THIS PRIMARY ACCOUNT THE PRIMARY ACCOUNT FOR that particular email address and if so, why isn't there a pulldown that will simply let me change the primary account for /that/ email address to another previously entered SMTP?! wouldn't this save a ton of aggravation?

or - should i EDIT the PRIMARY account for /each/ email address so that it reflects the correct SMTP for /that/ domain and so that it shows the EMAIL ADDRESS under USER for that particular email address?

also, i have been able to delete some of the "Other SMTP" accounts. but i have a long list of various cwmx.com servers and none of these seem to have a delete button irrespective of whether i turn on the primary or turn off the primary or turn on the Other SMTP or turn it off.

THANKS

The default email account will use the selected SMTP server for that account. Selecting a different server than the normal default that requires you to login using a email address and password will send emails that appear to come from the selected email account associated with that SMTP server. BTW, replying to an email sent from a particular email account will use the SMTP server associated account even from the All Inbox.

hi lawrence, all.

OK. a /ton/ of thanks for this help.

so, from what i am gathering, i am going to create a "bulk@mydomain.com" email address and add this account with the correct SMTP server. then i will delete all my other mydomain email accounts except for this one.

this way if i have a problem in the future i can just edit one account for each domain based email on the iphone...

does that make sense to you?

regards and THANKS
