Strange problem with Logic on Mountain Lion

Hi Guys,

I'm having a really annoying issue with my copy of Logic on Mountain Lion 10.8 OS X Build 12A269 ( The latest public release)

Details:

Mac processor 2 GHZ Intel Core i7

Memory 8 GB 1333 MHZ DDR3

O.S. Mountain Lion

Logic 9.1.7 (32 Bit)

Issue:

Once channel EQ analyser is run on logics own channel EQ the system becomes extremely slow and very quickly unresponsive. The audio continues to play however any button presses or attempts to move or exit the application are futile. Eventually when it appears that that system "catches up on itself" it looks like all inputs were recorded and quickly are responded to by the system. By turning off the analyser sometimes it can avoid the problem however if the user then turns it back on the issue replicates.

TLDR:

In a nutshell - after mucking about in Logic for any period of time over 10 minutes on mountain lion it stops responding, I cant click to 'x' out of analyzers/pop up windows, all other UI Elements are unresponsive and then after about 30 second delay it all starts working again.

This issue keeps happening, I've tried basic trouble shooting.

Anyone else seeing this?? I'm using a Focusrite 8I6 Scarlett.

Also I never see the OS X Beachball when this happens.

Recreation:

1- New project

2- New audio track

3- Settings- audio to 96.0000KHZ (personal recording preference and probably not required)

4- Record (for this sample placed in MP3 audio file for test editing)

5- Activate channel EQ (at this stage no issue will occur)

6- Turn on compressor on channel (not changing any settings as S.O.P when recording)

7- Duplicate track and copy and paste audio onto the new track

8- Mute that track (this is just to simulate normal operating environment using other functions)

9- Add a limiter to the original track and add loads of tracks to simulate mixing

10- This can take some time to have this problem surface

Seeing this in the console when just after the issue occurs:

Any news about the problem ?

Don't expect a fix anytime soon, there's new iPhones, iPods..etc. being released.

The fix will will most likely come in the next Logic incremental update or possibly in the next full update. It may also be dealt with in an OS update. Some have mentioned this problem is related to Prokit updates so maybe the fix will come there. I think it will take a bit, Logic has so many interdependencies internally and with the OS even small changes can wreak havoc.

I'm in the process of setting up a dual boot system;

using Snow Leopard.

But I'm also deeply disappointed with the Logic developers.

I switched from Cubase when Apple bought Logic.

I wrongly thought that Logic and Apple would be

in "lock step" going forward.

Now I'm looking around and wondering if I have better options.

I'd feel a lot more trust about the a new Logic X if I didn't

have any experience with Final Cut Pro X ...

It's performance has the same "ignore user input" issues ...

I'm downloading a trial of Ableton Live (as I'm typing this:)

and spent the morning taking another look at my Reason 6.5.1

... which btw seems to run very smoothly in Mountain Lion.

If I have to, I'll check out ProTools but they're usually the last ones

to update and I really don't want to depend

on MicroSloth or it's by-products ...

I wish I saw an upside to this.

However, all I see is the nightmare of the MacOS being handed to

the iOS people ... and all the Pro Apps being allowed to just twist-in-the-wind.

I love my iPad, but it doesn't begin to do what my Mac Pro with a 12TB strip-array can do.

Or should I say ... could do.

Michael, I know you're an experienced user but your comment about Microsloth... is of a time past, the fact is, both Windows XP and especially Windows 7 are extremely solid with audio applications, they are both far, far leaner and more configurable (and efficient) than the latest Mac operating systems. The University here uses both Macs and PCs running Nuendo in the audio visual dept and ProTools in the recording studio, they've stopped upgrading the Macs because of all the problems, the are now officially "frozen at Snow Leopard 10.6.8" per my recommendation. My 2 home machines are a Quad core Mac Pro running SL and Logic 9.1.3 (which is solid here) and a custom built PC running Win-7 and Cubase 6 (to stay compatible with the University systems). Both are equally solid running RME hardware.

I don't know what the deal was with Final Cut X, it never should have been released in that condition, early adopters basically paid Apple to beta test.

p.s. I don't think the Logic developers will go the FinalCut X route...(even though they had input to the audio section of X) it's still a Logic developing team who are not completely Appleized, (in the commercial sense). There;s a certain amount of pride there.

Yea ... I know I shouldn't detract from this thread by bringing up the Evil Empire.

(half joking)

And I realize I could build myself a **** of system for the price of a new MacPro.

Yet ... I still remember Vista.

And I still remember having DigiDesign leave my pci cards in a discarded heap.

But if I can't push Reason 6.5 into freaking out over Mountain Lion,

what the **** is the Logic Development Team doing?

Do you know anyone on that team?

Do they even like Apple? (half joking again)

Do they still exists?

It would cost them nothing to do a little PR and issue a statement

saying something like:

"Hang on guys ... we know there's an issue with Logic ignoring the user input

for long periods of time and then trying to execute every command it ignored

all at once, when it regains user awareness ... and we know things just got worst with 10.8 "

" Oh yea ... and we're working at on"

" Igor, pull the switch"

I have to agree. I mean even Native Instrument develpoers do this now and again, it wouldn't take a lot for them to actually acknowledge an issue once in a while.

I used to converse pleasantly with two of the Logic developers when they were EMagic, they were great with communication, many customers spoke with them from time to time. This continued for a bit after Apple purchased the company then a few years ago all fell silent. I imagine some of the main developers are still there but -any- type of direct communication with the masses is prohibited. There have been a couple of the developers visit this list now and then, some of the comments are read. All of Apple's PR is about sales now, and shiny things and "user experience".

I have a FIX for the lag issue. Don t know if it was mentioned already here.....

Tested it for two hours and it works on my 8core with ML 10.8.0 Logic 9.1.7

When logic is unresponsive.......right click on it s icaon in the dock. Then select the current project: "name- arr "

just above "options". Voila. Logic is back. Responds fine again. :-)

I can live with the lag issue now...just one mouse movement and it is gone

....so I am not going back to my SL clone. :-)

I think what you've described, Jane, is a re-load of the project file - if you're happy with it, OK.

Well, undoubtedly 😀. There are valid points that have been expressed in this and many other threads about users wanting particular fixes for the way the program runs and the way that it actually behaves and obviously people are having some real issues with different machine/OS/Logic version combinations, so there are some important but probably not too straightforward efforts to be made to make everyone happy.

I should think Apple have a minimal Logic team a lot of the time, until a new release starts to become imminent and then they have to bring in different brainwork to make it happen, which is probably the real trouble for a piece of professional software - I believe they have other priorities.
