Brand new installation of OS X Mountain Lion keeps showing me the spinning wheel

Hi all,

I installed Mountain Lion on my MacBookPro the day it came out. After that, I've started to see the spinning wheel every single minute, which makes the use of my Mac impossible.

I went to the Apple Store and the Geniouses over there formatted the disks and reinstalled everything.

It was working fine until I installed some program (can't say which one...) and now I only get the spinning wheel or screen freeze.

My theory (based on threads I read on the web and my own assumptions) is that it's propably related to an incompatible app, but I'm not an expert.

Does anyone have a clue?

Here's the output from EtreCheck (thanks EtreSoft):

Most likely the problem is one of these. Definitely get rid of BitDefender. LittleSnitch is a reliable, well-supported program, but you are also having problems. It would be best to remove it temporarily until you have things running better. The "SoundFlower" software is always reported by people having problems.

I haven't see the "Edovia screensconnect" software before. It could be a problem. The "Teamviewer" software may also be a problem.

Parallels is known be work on Mountain Lion, but make sure you have the most recent version.

This is probably who installed that "SoundFlower" software.

Little Snitch indicated that is't up-to-date (version 3.0 Preview 2 (3857). I got it off their website I think, last week.

As for BitDefender, I installed the demo which I downloaded a few days ago from their website (unregistered so far, as I only have a license for the previous version but I need to find the backup CD I have somewhere at home :-))

The current version installed is 2.10 (2.10.3864).

Does this help?

Hi!

I just uninstalled BitDefender 2012 and LittleSnitch, using the latest version of AppCleaner (I updated to the latest version a minute ago).

I'm rebooting my laptop now, and will do so after removing each app you mention, until I notice the problem has been fixed.

Snowtape (which apparently includes Soundflower) is an Interner radio client I think. Can't use it behind our work firewall so I may as well remove it :-)

Edovia Screenconnect allows you to remote connect to your Macs running it, similar to TeamViewer and the like.

I can remove those but I'd need an app which allows me to connect to my Macs at home and work PCs. Any suggestions?

Thanks for your help!

It is always best to use the uninstaller that came with the software. I suggest running EtreCheck again to look for anything AppCleaner left behind.

It is easier to go the other way and remove everything that is even possibly suspicious. If that doesn't do it, then remove anything third party. Only when you have the system running properly should you start reinstalling software.

But don't you have TeamViewer too? And how are either of those better than the built-in screen sharing?

OK. It seems that removing BitDefender and Little Snitch fixed the problem. I haven't had any frozen Finder nor a spinning wheel since I restarted after removing those apps.

I will try to see how long this lasts before removing any additional apps. Fingers crossed.

I'm assuming having a partition with Win7 installed on the hard disk wasn't the issue then (using BootCamp, not any virtualization soft). Am I correct in assuming I can re-install Win7 with BootCamp?

Remove apps with their original uninstaller. Got it. Thanks!

Here's the EtreCheck output I got after removing the above-mentioned apps with AppCleaner.

If I don't get any weird behavior in the next few days, I'll consider the issue resolved :-)

Thank you and Mende1!!

Hi!

Here's the EtreCheck output after removing Bitdefender and removing and reinstalling LittleSnitch (now version 3.0 preview 3 (3862). Everything seems to work fine, so I'm guessing that BitDefender was the issue. Since I have removed the app with AppCleaner and not the original uninstaller, I'm also assuming that the entries related to BitDefender below indicate that some system files have not been properly removed.

Bottom line is that it's working now, thanks to Mende1 and Etresoft!

Hi Again,

I've just installed BitDefender 2012 Trial with the hope I could install and reinstall with the uninstaller that came with it.

Installing worked fine, but I've already uninstalled the app twice, to no avail.

The folder /Library/BitDefender/AVP is still showing:

antiphishing.bundle

antivirus.bundle

Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac (application)

common.bundle

Any suggestion on how to get rid of this **** app?

thanks
