1. Obtain a copy of Quicken 2007 (PowerPC version) from Ferd at

http://thebestparts.net/2011/07/26/how-to-convert-an-older-quicken-data-file-to- use-on-mac-os-10-7-lion/

(or see below***), and install it on my MacBook Pro O SX v10.6;

2. Open my Quicken 2004 data files with it and save the modified PowerPC 2004->2007 files in a new backup folder

3. Buy the new/update Quicken 2007 and install it on my MacBook Pro O SX v10.6 and open up the PPC 2004->2007 data file with this new version and confirm that it will work with the new 2007 version in Snow Leopard.

4. Transfer the PowerPC 2007 data files to the iMac, install new Quicken 2007 there and confirm that they will open the data file with the new 2007 version in Lion.

5. AFTER verifying that this has actually worked: upgrade my MacBook Pro to OS X v10.7

See my NOTE below about using only one data file for both Macs using file sharing.

***the data upgrade can also be accomplished on a PPC Quicken 2006 which can be downloaded from Intuit:

http://quicken.intuit.com/support/help/patching/quicken-2006-manual-updates--mac -/GEN82200.html

NOTE: It is NOT a good idea to use two different data files. You can mistakenly make different modifications to each of the two files.

I recommend you do what I do:

I keep only one data file on my 24/7 desktop Mac Mini with Lion and Quicken 2007 for Lion. On my MacBookPro with Lion, I use file sharing to access my data file and open it with another copy of Quicken 2007 for Lion.

In this way I will never mistakenly make different modifications to two different data files, as I am always only using one data file.

If I try to open the same data file on the second machine (while it continues to be open on the first machine), Quicken will not let me open the one and only data file on the second Mac.

OF COURSE: backup, backup, backup!

Michael,

Thanks, particularly for the extra advice. I am happy to be able to stay in love with Quicken for a bit longer. At least until Apple and Intuit do their best to enforce a permanent divorce! Seriously, given that Apple obviously have the upper hand, what are Intuit thinking about in not being reactive if not proactive?

Thanks again.

Hi Michael,

It worked! Brilliantly in fact! As far as I can see I haven't lost anything including memorised transactions & reports going back to when I first started to use Quicken in the erly 90s. As you suggested it was not necessary to get a copy of Quicken 2007 as v2006 is available directly from Intuit

http://quicken.intuit.com/support/help/patching/quicken-2006-manual-updates--mac -/GEN82200.html

and this opened and converted all my v2004 files on my MacBook Pro O SX 10.6. I copied these onto a stick and then opened these on my iMac O SX v10.7 after I had downloaded the updated Quicken 2007 directly from Intuit. As others have noted Intuit don't exactly make it easy to find this but the nice surprise was that there was no charge! Perhaps they are now realising that they have to keep the likes of us sweet for at least a bit longer.

Any way the bottom line is that thanks to your advice I continue to be a happy Quicken user! Thanks again and best regards

Alan

I am also a long-time Quicken user, who tried iBank and gave up in disgust. I am currently running the Quicken 2007 upgrade on an iMac using Snow Leopard and am relieved to know it wll continue to work when I upgrade to Lion/Mtn. Lion.

My question has to do with my iBook Pro, which came with Lion. Can I simply install the Quicken 2007 upgrade on it? If so, is there a simple way to copy the program from my iMac? From the previous discussion it doesn't seem that installing the old version and then upgrading will work once Lion is running.

Thanks for your help, and all the prior helpful posts.
