Are my memory slots supposed to be 'currently in use' all the time when I turn on my MacBook Pro?

I have a brand new MBP 13" with Dual Core i5 2.5 Ghz, 4GB DDR3 RAM and 500 GB HDD. It runs smoothly but I have been intrigued by the fact that both the memory slots are in use all the time even when I'm doing very light work in my MBP. Is it normal or is there a problem? My HDD has enough space left (around 430 out of 500 GB).

Ignore markwmsn's post, doesn't apply to you & did nothing but add confusion. Your computer shipped with both slots full, and is designed to run with both slots full. Will it run with only run slot in use...yes. Is it designed this way...no. Your computer will have the best performance using matched pairs in both slots, as designed.
