80 page:File size 1.67GB

Something wrong here...

I have an 80 page document with thirty images and text . The file size is now 1.67 GB. The pdf file generated is 225 MB, Pages is very sluggish.

After restarting my Mac and Pages, the file fails to load. It crashes and generates a crash report.

The Text only file is 160K. With the backup text file, I began to recreate the project. After chapter one the file size grew to 256 MB.

Perhaps my pictures are too big?

My OS9 Pagemaker file of the same document is 45MB. The pdf file it generated was 1.7MB.

pbeaudet,

have you adjusted some of this images with Pages image editing tool? I have read in this forum that this will generate copies of the original images and the file size will be up to three or four times. Have a look into the document package folder (by clicking with control key + mouse button into the document icon and choosing the appearing menu item "Show Package Contents") if there are copies of your images and if the images are really 4MB in size or greater.

Incredible! I am shocked at the number of image files. It appears that every adjusted image has a tiff file or two (24 MB each). I'll play with it further to see if I can resurrect all my text formatting for the new document. Maybe it will work by deleting all the tiffs, on a backup, of course.

I had no idea that the file had package contents. I should have known.

Thank you!

Philip

The images are from iPhoto and are jpeg. They are about 4 MB each. There are 60 images. The page size is 8.5 X 11

I noticed that file file size does shrink as I size the images smaller.

In fact you will be able to shrink these pictures a lot with no apparent loss of resolution. If a picture is to be printed full-page, it may need to be a meg or so, but if the picture is going to be say 2" x 3" on the page you can shrink it to a few hundred k (i.e. factor of 8 or so smaller). I use Photo-Deluxe or Photoshop Elements for that.

The quality of the images a great. I started yesterday with just 160k text. My final document is now 200 MB. This is much better than the 1.67 GB. The best pdf generated is 225 MB. I generated a good pdf with a file size of 2.5 MB.

Any image adjusted images swell the file size. Using media from iPhoto appears to use an unedited copy of the image. To create larger sizes and adjust, Photoshop Elements saved back to iPhoto or imported directly into Pages works.

With that in mind, Pages was easy to learn and use. It is much easier than Pagemaker on OS9.
