I upgraded to Mountain Lion on my MacBook Air 2011. Now whenever I plug in headphones the mail app repeats all the sounds that it has already played through the built-in speakers in succession. So if I have not plugged in headphones for a day I get the last days worth of mail sounds played all over again. Can take a minute or two to get through them all. No idea what is happening.

If you turn off Mail's preference settings for sound does the problem go away?
Try toggling your System Preference > Sounds to a different output device and see if this helps.
I have this exact same problem on my retina Macbook Pro.
Well... I made a video of it happening. Strange thing is that today it no longer does it. I have not done a software update (AFAIK). Seems like it existed for about three weeks or so. At least I have video proof if needed (for my sanity!).
I read in the Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.1 update that audio issues via Thunderbolt were fixed. Wondering if all of you are still experiencing the problem after upgrading to 10.8. and if any of you were using Thunderbolt display montiors.
Very interesting! I thought my problem was resolved (somehow) so I tried with my thunderbolt monitor plugged in - which it normally is but was not when I did the last test. And... it's back! so looks like a good chance it is related to the thunderbolt port. I am about to upgrade right now! Thanks for spotting this!!!
I've been having the exact same issue on my MacBook Air (newest model)—and it's not just the mail sounds, but system alert sounds as well. Every mail send sound or system alert sound that's accumulated since the last time I rebooted the computer will play through headphones, when I plug them in.
In the large scale of things it's not a grave bug, but it's a little annoying to have to listen to 30 seconds of whooshing and booping until it catches up.
I'm still encountering the problem in 10.8.1. I don't have anything that uses a Thunderbolt connection.
In my case, it was a problem with Messages application. Yesterday i added my facebook chat account, and today i was hearing the Mail sound every minute.
So i tried deleting the facebook chats account from Messages, and now i´m not getting the sound again.
This occurs for me too on my MacBook Pro 15" with Retina running OSX 10.8.1. It's almost as though it queues up all the notification sounds between when the headphones are plugged in, and then plays everything back over the headphones.
Really annoying, especially after a long weekend. haha!

Meet too! Barnd new MacBook Air with Mt Lion. Stopped when I closed the Mail window. Weird... only once so far.
I'm experiencing this as well on the latest Mountain Lion. I've used every OS since leopard on my current mac and haven't had this problem before Mountain Lion. I'm very dissapointed in Apple that this hasn't been fixed. It makes me like Apple a little less every time I have to deal with this.
Actually, this has been happening on my wife's MacBook Air for probably a year now. Sometimes when she opens the computer, Mail makes noises like sending and receiving, over and over, and very rapidly. I never had the problem until I upgraded to Mountain Lion, and now it happsn to me too occasionally, though only on my MacBook Air, not my MacBook Pro. Very strange, but I honestly don't think it has anything to do with Thunderbolt. I have Thunderbolt on my MacBook Pro, but it doesn't happen there.
I, like many others, have this problem on my iMac with Mountain Lion - question is does anyone have a fix? I'm running 10.8.1 and it's still a problem.
I'll confirm it's not just a thunderbol issue. This happens on my 2009 mb pro when I plug in my headphones. Now I have to leave my headphones off for several seconds so I don't get blasted with all of the sounds. I never had this problem with other OSs until mountain lion.
I have a version of this issue. When I plug an external pair of speakers into my brand new (August 2012) MacBook Air with Mountain Lion 10.8.1, I get a few mail send sounds; sometimes 5 or six of them repeatedly, sometimes fewer, and sometimes none at all. I have not noticed the sounds corresponding to the number of emails that I have sent since I last plugged it in, but it is possible (I will pay attention and report later). It is hardly a 'real' problem, but it is a bit annoying.
