Slave screen setup for MacBook Pro

Trying to use a dell flat monitor as a slave screen with my MacBook Pro (v10.6.8). Have cords, monitor connected and on, but nothing is on "slave" screen. Would appreciate any tips on how to get it going.

Nothing on the slave meaning (a) the slave screen is black, (b) the slave screen is white, (c) the slave screen has a desktop background without any windows, or (d) something else (what?)?
