no dial tone

I have a Ibook G4 and a dial-up modem. It will no longer connect to the internet. At first it said there was no dial tone, but today, it made wierd noises first as if it were busy, then as if there were a dial tone. Both were extremely fuzzy. and it still says no dial tone. It started after a thunderstorm, the power was out and i turned my laptop on and was on the internet for roughly two hours with the storm long gone before the internet decided to quit and not come back. Sorry this is so long, but someone please help me, I'll die without internet on my laptop LOL. Thanks

I don't have voice mail. all our phones are hung up. our other computers, both HP can both get online. I've plugged a phone into the jack and it works. I've plugged the phone and my ibook into the jack and tried the manual dial thing. that didn't work either. i've tried the hardware test that comes on the format disc. the hardware test said it found my modem, but it didn't appear to do any tests on it. should it have?
thanks

I've been to that page. the power was out when i turned my laptop on, and i got on the internet and was on it for two hours before it kicked me off, the power was still out, a tree had landed on the wires. oh, i don't know if this will help anyone help me but, when the cable is plugged into my laptop, the other computers also get no dial tone, even though mine isn't connected to the internet.

we can't get anything but dialup out here lol

i tried phoner. i think there is still no dial tone, though i don't really know how to use it. i put in a number and told it to dial and nothing happened. i noticed that if my laptop is plugged in to the phone jack if i pick up a phone there is no dialtone. but if you unplugged the laptop and then picked up the phone again you'd get one, and with the phone to your ear, if you plugged the latop back in, the dialtone wouldn't go away, but it wouldget quieter. Is my modem dead? if so, how do i fix/replace it?

thanks

On my iBook, I don't hear a dial tone using Phoner, but when I put in a number and hit 'dial', I do hear the number over the iBook speakers as it is dialed. If you've ruled out a bad telephone cable, it does not look good for your modem.

If you have insurance, it should cover a lightning strike. Assuming your iBook is out of warranty, repairing it might be expensive. Another option is the Airport Base Station with a built-in modem.
