Dead Pixels on Mabook Pro with Retina?

I have had my macbook pro with retina for about a month and a half, and maybe 2 weeks ago I noticed one dead pixel that glowed green on black backgrounds. Wasnt a huge deal, since on white it blended. But now it has moved up to about 4 to 6 dead pixels, a few of which are even black when on a white screen. Honestly, not the BIGGEST of deals since a good percentage of my at home time with the computer, it is hooked to an external display. But it is quite distracting while watching movies such as Harry Potter and the Dark Knight because both movies were shot in dark scenery. Glowing green and white pixels should not be occuring.

I was wondering if bringing it back was an option since pixels should not be dead this early on. I just think since I spent $2,500 on a computer, it should come with a hefty warrenty on it's precious feature display. Is this due to my brightness being cranked up, or what could be a way to end the dead pixel trend my computer is getting into.

you're under warranty - two things might happen - they will either repair it by changing the screen or they will give you a new one.

the best solution for this is to take it to apple and have them diagnose it and see where it goes from there.

good luck - hope it gets sorted out for you...

It's not about macbook pro but i want to share my experience about apple care ( or doesn't care) with my ipad3.

The 1st one that i got is nearly perfect except a little yellow screen, but i can accept it. I had owned it for 6 months and there are problem about speaker. Two months later I returned it to get the second one.

The 2nd one's speaker is perfect, but it came with the new problems that is the yellow screen. The left side is more yellow than the right and i cannot accept it, so i waste my time for the third one.

The 3rd one came with the perfect screen. It is better than the 1st and 2nd, but it came with the dust under the screen that i can see clearly. There are also light that leak on the left side and the bottom. I have to accept it because it's screen is so beautiful than the others i got before, and i don't want to waste my time in the repair cycle that take the new problems to me. I comment about this bad experience to apple on the web and i cannot receive their any response.

I love their product, but i am very disappointed in their QC. Apple care but they show no care.

And now i am waiting for comming of my macbook air 2013 in the next few days that i hope it should have no dead pixel.

Sorry for my english. And thank you to read my comment.

Okay so months down the road from my 2nd screen I have another cluster of dead pixels :/ going to see if it gets worse before I take it in to the mac store. I was told by the manager at the store that if it happened again I could get my money back, exchange for a new one, or pick a different model. I think I may go with the non retina because of all the issues I've had with this retina display! What happens when this happens out of my applecare plan? Then i'm screwed.

I just found another group of dead/stuck pixels on my 2nd replaced screen! YOUVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME! Haha. This was good news actually because they just released a refreshed 15 inch retina pro. I waited until the refresh was announched, took my macbook pro into the store, talked to the manager, and because this was my THIRD time needing a repair, they swapped my computer out with the REFRESHED pro! So far at my Apple store they have treated me like gold and i'm so thankful.

Let's just hope this model doesn't do the same thing!

Yes, I believe so, it has an iris pro, rather than the dedicated card.

You really dont' care about it?

I would NOT accept a item, which has worse configuration, than one for which i paid.

I have in my 15" retina 2x replaced the screen. One the bad pixels occured for the third time I got new item. Instead of 2,3Ghz I got 2,4 because 2,3 was no longer avaliable. But it was surpluse for me.

Now I have bad pixels in new item. I am going to demand replacment of item without loosing time for screen replacments or significiant money refund.

ANYWAY you SHOULD NOT ACCEPT REPLACMENT for ITEM with WEAKER configuration, e.g without dedicated graphic card.

I have this issue as well. The problem is that the dead pixel showed up a year after purchase. I had to originally get the screen fixed because of the 'ghosting' problem that was affecting these models. I just discovered this problem today. While it is not a huge issue, it's kind of annoying and I would really like to get it fixed. However, I don't think that Apple will do this for free (since it's no longer under warranty) and I would have to pay $800 to get it fixed.

So I just noticed a dead pixel in mine. Will go to my official AppleStore where I bought it. Have Applecare. Bought the lowest 15" model.

I am sure not accepting a non-dedicated-graphics replacement, though I don't think Apple is willing to chunk up 600$ MRSP difference when exchanging me the computer.

I see myself with the dilema... Suggestions?

I started noticing dead pixels on my mid 2012 mbp VERY shortly after Ibought it. I just got the logic board replaced and asked the tech to check the display. He said it looked fine and that it may have had to do with the board. Now I'm looking at it and there they are. I was too lazy to get on it from the beginning, but it is getting worse. Ah, the bitter-sweetness of technology. Oh the power! Oh the repairs!

A little history:

1st mac: powerbook titanium 15" pre-intel 1st model: the hinge blew out (that new fancy hinge).

2nd mac imac intel with the metal frame: that's given me no problems. I did upgrade the RAM after market but the warranty had run.

3rd mac: 12" intel. Still runs but fans are so loud from the moment that I turn it on that it annoys ME along with everyone else with 50 feet.

4th mac: my lovely macbook pro mid 2012 that just had a new logic board installed and has a fair amount of dead pixels.

Well, the candle that burns twice as bright burns only half as long. Remember though, kids, Alan Turing killed himself with an apple.

Peace and flowers, Mike

I have 1 stuck dead pixel or a cluster (not sure but it's small) and a few 3 or 4 very very tiny faint looking dead pixels. I'm on a Jan 2013 rMBP 15" 2.6 16G 512G with the dual graphics cards. The larger dead pixel has been there since day one but I do have the samsung screen so I thanked my lucky stars. I only noticed the others a few months ago. I was in the apple store for another reason and took it with me and asked about the applecare. The salesman seemed to think they could take care of it. Question for you guys,...my 1 year is about to be up so I need to either get applecare or take my chances. Other than this dead pixel the only issues I've had are OS10.9, as I had none of them until I uopgraded the OS. Still considering going back to my super duper clone of 10.8.x to see if that fixes things. Is the APplecare worth the $350. I hope to use this machine 2-3 more years minimum. I see no reason I can't use it longer as long as it's still working for what I do and I have no reason to believe it won't. In fact the only reason I could imagine getting a new one is the addition of a touch screen. I already have an external hi def touch screen so I'm getting by fine with that. SO should I get the applecare?

Picked up the brand new 13" 256G 8G 2.4GHz rMBP for my wife a couple of weeks ago. It runs much much cooler (no dedicated video card I guess) and for day to day stuff it seems perfectly adequate. I won't really have a chance to test it at work, but I don't feel like I've maxed mine out yet.

THey say the Applecare doesn't cover accidents to the glass getting broken by idiots (I carry it in a hard case but stuff happens as the bumper sticker says). In fact, it's enterly possible for someone to fall on it or drop something on it or for some idiot stage hand to throw something across the room and have it hit my machine. Some of these folks you get in places like New Orleans aren't even sober when they come to unload the trucks. That being said, I wonder if regular insurance is better for me. AppleCare to me seems like I'm just buying a second machine at Apple's cost to manufacture so if anything they did in the design fails, they can replace it at no real loss. Is that true?

Thanks!

By the way, one (easy, cheep, sure and reproducible) way to use "a vendor" test for bad clusters in case you were wondering, is to install windows temporarily, give the boot camp partition the largest available fee space chunk available.

The full windows installation could had been skipped and you could had used fsck though 🙂

The short answer is YES, it's worth it to get the 3 year AppleCare deal.

It seems expensive until your screen fails ($600) or anything on the logic board fails (> $1000).

Personally I "abuse" batteries so after 2 years or so AppleCare gets me the battery replaced for free. I've never had a battery that lasted more than a year before the Apple non-replaceable ones came out - these are supposed to last at least 3. I've had one so far, failed after 2 years.
