What's the best case for a Macbook Air for someone who *may* drop the laptop?

I am also clumsy but I find Apple products exceptionally tough.

I dropped my MacBook Air with no case or anything onto concrete from like 1 meter and this is all that happened

I also dropped my iPad from a table onto the same floor and when I saw it face down I was dreading having to pick it up...it was fine however with not a mark in sight

Yes this is just the experience of 1 person however I think people are too cautious nowdays

Remember the things you read on here "I dropped my macbook and the screen shattered please help" are probably the minority - if someone dropped it and it was fine they wouldn't post here so you are getting a false sense that everyone who drops their machine ends up bad!

B: 2 data backups.

Girl I know had same, dropped hers in the river. She got cut a check for a new Air the next day and did a TM restore to the new machine.

Ive been using a type of insurance for countless years called "inland marine insurance" for drops/ accidents/ loss / theft.

Other than that, the best protection is a foam lined zero-haliburton case.

little late to this forum; but I am going to go buy the Thule case today. It looks pretty sterdy and will prevent any damage from fall or spills since I carry mine around to work / travel etc.

Seriously? While there are padded carrying cases that probably offer some protection if you drop your computer, the type of case you are looking for doesn't exist as far as I know. There's a big difference between an iPhone and a computer...plus even a case isn't proof against all drops.

No way and it isn't always a matter of clumsiness. My PowerBook 140 flew from the backseat, over the frontseat and into the windshield when I was in a wreck. It was partially decapitated (the LCD hanging by a cable) and the bottom case cracked. Amazingly, when I took it into the shop it booted up! honestly, what you need is not a case. Normally, people dont drop a laptop everyday, as it will allways be on a table. the most typical issue is scratching the aluminum surface if you use to carry on your macbook on a backpack, with some other stuff. I also preffer the aluminum finish instead of the speck plastic cases (but it's just my opinion)

i carry mine on my backpack everyday, and it's perfectly fine. The only thing I have is a neoprene sleeve which is very light for my mobility needs. and in case of dropping it, it can absorb more damage than just a plastic case.

I have to agree with icano69. Whenever I'm transferring my Air from one place to another, it rides in a cushy neoprene sleeve, even when it's in my backpack. When it's in use, it runs nekkid, the way Apple intended. 🙂

I bought a Moshi iGlaze for my MBA, so not sure if I want to shell out another $40 for a sleeve that may or may not be needed if I'm carrying it in my backpack for school.

If you think dropping your Mac will be a problem then the best thing I can think of to get is this. Remember Macs are not toys and should be used with care, and if you think it will be damaged then you should get this.

Mach 3 Composites makes hard shell carbon fiber cases for both the Pro and the Air called the TAC-1. I have had mine now for 3 years and it has saved my Pro many times. They are real carbon fiber cases so it is both light and strong. The cases are padded and lined, they also have a waterproof zipper. Be advised real carbon fiber is not not cheap but well worth it if you like the carbon fiber look. They also make their cases here in the USA.

I would suggest the TopCase 5-in-1 bundle. It comes with a hard case, sleeve, screen protector, keyboard cover, and a mouse (for convenience not protection 🙂 ). I think the best way to stay protected is to just have all your bases covered as opposed to throwing some extremely large case on and taking away from the fact that it's supposed to be light and thin!
