What's the best case for a Macbook Air for someone who *may* drop the laptop?

I see all the forums here about cases for Macbook Air, but most people seem more worried about scratches. I am looking for the lightest case that might actually protect the Air in a fall. Any ideas?

BTW I have been a long time PC laptop user which seem to be a bit more rugged (and thus heavy). I have dropped my PC laptop in the past without any damage. I've bought the Macbook Air 13 which arrives this week. I don't mind adding a little weight to the laptop to protect it in a fall...

I found Cozistyle Smart Sleeve is the best bag for MacBook. Functional, ergonomic , unique, colorful in 3 different material : Leather, Canvas and Linen. With integrated Smart CoolingPad which pop-up automatically as soon as you lift your MacBook. Perfect for ergonomic typing. This provides a ventilation gap under the MacBook for improved airflow and keep your MacBook Cool !

I am also clumsy but I find Apple products exceptionally tough.

I dropped my MacBook Air with no case or anything onto concrete from like 1 meter and this is all that happenedUser uploaded file

I also dropped my iPad from a table onto the same floor and when I saw it face down I was dreading having to pick it up...it was fine however with not a mark in sight

Yes this is just the experience of 1 person however I think people are too cautious nowdays

Remember the things you read on here "I dropped my macbook and the screen shattered please help" are probably the minority - if someone dropped it and it was fine they wouldn't post here so you are getting a false sense that everyone who drops their machine ends up bad!

If you have A and B, it doesnt matter if it falls off a cliff.

A: theft/ accident/ spill insurance called "inland marine insurance"

B: 2 data backups.

Girl I know had same, dropped hers in the river. She got cut a check for a new Air the next day and did a TM restore to the new machine.

Ive been using a type of insurance for countless years called "inland marine insurance" for drops/ accidents/ loss / theft.

Other than that, the best protection is a foam lined zero-haliburton case.

Ok, apparently I'm the only clumsy Mac user.

No way and it isn't always a matter of clumsiness. My PowerBook 140 flew from the backseat, over the frontseat and into the windshield when I was in a wreck. It was partially decapitated (the LCD hanging by a cable) and the bottom case cracked. Amazingly, when I took it into the shop it booted up! I removed the drive and rescued my data and the other driver's insurance company eventually paid to replace the computer. A few years later a woman brought her husband's PowerBook into the shop - I guess he was too embarrased to bring it in himself. He'd put it on his car's roof, forgot about it, and it fell to the street. Somehow in the ensuing panic he drove over it too. It was totalled but it too booted up.

So Apple computers are tough but dropping them is still a recipe for disaster and a case probably isn't likely to add any extra toughness. Protecting from bumbs, scratches, and maybe liquid is possible, but drops?

honestly, what you need is not a case. Normally, people dont drop a laptop everyday, as it will allways be on a table. the most typical issue is scratching the aluminum surface if you use to carry on your macbook on a backpack, with some other stuff. I also preffer the aluminum finish instead of the speck plastic cases (but it's just my opinion)

i carry mine on my backpack everyday, and it's perfectly fine. The only thing I have is a neoprene sleeve which is very light for my mobility needs. and in case of dropping it, it can absorb more damage than just a plastic case.

hope to have been helpful 🙂

The G-Form Sleeve has been literally crash tested by creator. There are several youtube videos demonstarting the protection. He even throws is his own Macbook Pro off a 2nd story deck completely unharmed.

The Pelican Briefcase With Foam is the ultimate protection, like the G-Form case, has some hilarious destruction demonstrations to prove your Macbook Pro can be indestructible.

Mach 3 Composites makes hard shell carbon fiber cases for both the Pro and the Air called the TAC-1. I have had mine now for 3 years and it has saved my Pro many times. They are real carbon fiber cases so it is both light and strong. The cases are padded and lined, they also have a waterproof zipper. Be advised real carbon fiber is not not cheap but well worth it if you like the carbon fiber look. They also make their cases here in the USA.

I would suggest the TopCase 5-in-1 bundle. It comes with a hard case, sleeve, screen protector, keyboard cover, and a mouse (for convenience not protection 🙂 ). I think the best way to stay protected is to just have all your bases covered as opposed to throwing some extremely large case on and taking away from the fact that it's supposed to be light and thin! Hope that helps!!
