Midi Echo? Midi Thru?

I am using Logic 9 with a Roland Digital Piano as a controller. While the local control works on the Roland to disable the internal speakers while it's not hooked up to my Mac, when it's connected though Logic the speakers continue to sound. i contacted Roland and they told me I need to turn off either the Midi Echo or Midi Thru function in Logic to stop this from happening.

I have been through every control in Logic but I don't see any such items. Would anyone have any ideas? Thanks

Logic Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.3)

This is from memory as I'm not at my home system.

It will be under Settings: (which means it's on a "per song" basis.)

It's called "Instrument without MIDI Thru setting" or something similar.

The odd thing about this is you need an environment object for the Roland in order for it to be seen in the drop down. So, a "multi-instrument" or an "instrument" is required. Your Roland probably transmits on channel 1 and you're letting Logic rechannelize for you so either should work.

If you already have a Roland instrument in the environment you're set.

Thanks. That works to cut off the sound to the Roland's internal speakers. Unfotunately now I have the opposite problem - no sound is being transmitted from the Roland through my audio system (Alesis Multi mix 8). I had this system up and running for years so I know it should work. However, when I got the Roland and upgraded to 9 at the same time all bets were off.

I just read though some similar posts expressing dismay at these seemingly easy connecion problems. It's infuriating.

I have an instrument in the Environment for the Roland but I haven't been able to locate a multiset for it. I spoke to Roland and they tell me they'll try topost the instrument listings on the website within a week or so. I'm not sure that will be helpful in any way but perhaps I will be able to figure out how to make a multiset for it. In any even if you have any other ideas for the midi thru problem I would love to hear them. Thanks

I wouldn't worry about the multiset too much, it's a digital piano not a multi-timbral synth that's going to be sequenced on 16 MIDI channels. That part of the Environment only relates to MIDI not audio.

Is other audio getting through the Alesis?

How is the Alesis being monitored, does it have powered speakers attached?

Are you speaking of recording the Roland or monitoring the audio through Logic?

In Preferences/Audio is "software monitoring" enabled.

Yes, other sounds get through to the Alesis finr.

Yes, powered Alesis speakers are attached to the Multimix but I would say that the biggest proble is that without the Roland sound traveling into the Alesis I can't play silently while using headphones (ie, while recording through Logic- headphones work fine on the Roland itself)

Yes, I'm trying to record the Roland. and monitor the audio through Logic both. It records and plays back fine. I just can't get it to play through the Alesis.

Yesl software monitoring is enabled.

Strange and oddly convoluted...

Here's one idea, since the Roland effectively has Local set to off by virtue of the "Instrument without MIDI Thru setting". If you're trying to record the Roland directly to audio you won't hear anything unless you also select a MIDI track so the Roland can play itself.

Also, in the Environment for the Roland instrument... in the inspector on the left, set the "Channel" to All and make sure the correct MIDI port is selected.
