Signature is grayed out in Mountain Lion's Preview app menu

Does this feature only work with certain hardware? I'm using a 2008 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo MBP with OS 10.8. I needed to get a signed letter out quickly and tried to use Preview's Tools > Annotate > Signature capability. I also tried the Marker drop-down in the tool bar. The Annotate menu had a grayed Signature and the drop-down didn't list iSight, so I couldn't capture an image of my signature. The iSight works fine for PhotoBooth, so I assume that can't be the problem.

Any help would be appreciated:-)

BTW, PDF Pen for the Mac and the iPad came to the rescue... great apps!

Not hardware dependent.

Try Preview Preferences > Signatures
Create one or more signatures
Then from the toolbar click on "Show Edit Toolbar"
Use the signature button (or dropdown to select the desired signature)

Thanks, but no luck. Preview Preferences won't create signatures, much less let me access them. The PDF was created by the OS Xs Print function... I wonder if this is the cause of the problem.
