error messages- help please

I get the error when trying to update the ipod. It seems that it goes into disk mode and it shows up as being connected in the updater, then eventually it drops out of disk mode and that is when the error occurs. Does the failing of the hard drive diagnostics mean the hd is toast? Coupled with the fact that if there is any noise or vibration produced by the thing that it can't be felt or heard even with it held tightly to your ear I don't feel very hopeful. Any idea what the time frame would be on a replacement? Thanks again.

hehe, i guess i didn't really answer the question...the error occurs when trying to install the software on the ipod.

anyhoo i've been talking to apple and have it all set up for a return here's hoping i get it back soon.

good plan with getting a fresh ipod. that weird "firmware update 1628" you're getting is pretty rare and fiddly, and i always worry a bit about a damaged ipod when i see it. fingers crossed, the replacement unit should behave a bit better for you. keep us posted!

Thanks for all the help. I just hope that somehow that I can send it back and get is assessed and returned before I go to the U.K. for the summer on May 3rd. The flight and a whole summer away from my mp3s was the main reason I bought the thing so hopefully I can spend my last few hours in Canada loading it up for the flight. I don't suppose anyone has an idea of what the turnaround time of getting a replacement is once they receive your broken ipod? Thanks again,

it's not something i've had personal experience with, but i found this on the service FAQ:

How long will my iPod service take?
If your iPod is not personalized, your service will take approximately one week from the date we receive your iPod for service to the date you receive your replacement iPod. If your iPod is personalized, your service will take approximately two to three weeks from the date we receive your iPod for service to the date you receive your replacement iPod.
