OS 9 + Tiger Dual Boot????

Is it possible to get a dual boot of OS 9.2 & 10.4?

My PPC G4 (Dual 867 'silver doors' model) came pre-installed as a dual boot 9.2 & 10.2.

I want to wipe the drive and start again. But (believe it or not) I still use a lot of OS 9 software that doen't run in classic mode!

Anyone know of a way to do this - however complicated? I'm very patient (got used to it!)

Cheers,

Matt 🙂

Hi Matt,

first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!

Yes, no problem. I suggest you reformat and partition the drive: One partition for OS 9 and one for 10.4. Use the OS 9 install disk to do the reformating or make sure you select "Install OS 9 drivers" when using the Tiger DVD!!!

Then install OS 9 first. Update it to 9.2.2: Mac OS 9: Available Updates. Make sure you can boot from this partition!

If you need Classic as well, copy the freshly installed OS 9 system folder to the partition for OS X. Bless it by draging the Finder to the desktop and back into the system folder.

Now boot from the Tiger install DVD and install Tiger to the OS X partition.

Good luck!

Don't forget, you should also install the Mac OS 9 drivers when you erase your hard drive. This article explains how:

otherwise it won't be Mac OS 9 bootable. Erasing the hard drive is rarely necessary. If you would like some help troubleshooting an existing issue, we may be able to help you avoiding erasing your hard drive altogether.
