Compressor Stalls, won't finish job

I am using Compressor 4.0.4 on an iMac, OS X Mountain Lion, i7.

Every time I go to compress a 90 minute .mov file in Compressor (haven't tried other file types) on my home computer it goes all the way until it shows having about a minute left and then Compressor just stalls. It never gets to the point where it asks me to insert a blank DVD. I know the burner is okay because I can use Toast 11 to burn DVDs without problem.

I have virtually the same computer at work and Compressor 4.0.4 works fine. At home I tried reinstalling Compressor to no avail, tried trashing preferences, then followed an Apple support page where it said to trash the Apple Qmaster folder in Library/Application support, which i also did, still to no avail.

Please help...

Yes, I repaired permissions, but i think it's not a permission problem.

Compressor has a lot of stability issues, it's not normal that you need to stay repairing permissions every day to try to use an app, it looks like the app has compatibility problems.

For example, the preview windows is very fragile, trying to put chapters inside and move the video back and forth, this hang the app (beachball starts and never ends).

So my solution is trying to not use the compressor, but for some things (like doing chapters to DVD) i need it, and it has very good export settings that FCPX hasn't

My point that in a PRO environment it's almost impossible for use the compressor app, it's look like a beta or worst.

I agree with fleis, as I said, I have done virtually everything I can think of trying to resolve this issue. But again, it is a Mountain Lion issue according to my contact at Apple, and the good news is that they know about it, the bad news is we have no idea when the update will be. I am now using Toast 11, but it is a real hassle for certain things. I miss Compressor.

If your having that much problems with Compressor you should take your Mac into an Apple Store and let them have a look at it. You can also try Compressor on one of their Macs.

I've been using Compressor for about 10 years. Ten years ago I would agree with you (no h.265 back then). It was so bad I didn't use it. It was crap-oh-la!!! This is the best version I have every used.

I think the problem is not the mac. In my case Im using two macs, one imac i5 and other brand new mbp i7, both with Mountain Lion and compressor is very unstable.

I think the problem is the combination of Mountain Lion and compressor, there are something that doesn't like each other.

For example Im trying to export using compressor settings a small video, I trying to mark the chapters using preview and moving the video back and forth and boom, the beachball starts spinning and I need to force quit the compressor.

David are you using Mountain Lion?

bikinijack, I suggest you try those apps, maybe it could help.

In my case Im trying not to use the compressor until apple fix it, at least for ML.

There are a nice tool caller "Compressor repair" (free) from Digital Rebellion that makes some "repairs" to the compressor app (like trash preferences, trash caches, etc) maybe could be help http://www.digitalrebellion.com/compressorrepair/

The other app that it's very interesting is http://www.digitalrebellion.com/promaintenance/

Promaitenance is a series of mini apps to solve and troubleshoot problems (one of it is compressor repair). Maybe it could help to solve FCPX issues and compressor too.

It cost 139 but I'm thinking to purchase it because it's good to have a "repair kit" in case of problems.

Let me know if the compressor repair improve your experience, in my case I used it, later start to use compressor (at least the first minutes goes well) but later it hangs again, beachball spinning..

Thanks, fleis, believe me, I have all those, as I said earlier I was absolutely desperate to try to figure this out so I was buying anyting that might make Compressor work. I reinstalled everything too. Beach ball.

It is Mountain Lion. One suggestion they made to me by my Apple friend mentioned above was to make a partition on my hard drive with Lion on it, then reboot in Lion and use Compressor that way. The problem is, I know how to make a partition when I am going from Lion to Mountain Lion, but I am not sure how to do that from ML to Lion (ML won't let me make a Lion partition).

Yes it's frustrating..

Maybe an option could be to use VMWARE Fusion, it allows you to run another OS in a windows, making a virtual machine and install lion inside the VM.

It's crazy, but it could be an option until somebody in apple solves the issues.

It's very clear that Compressor 4.0.4 has some problems that in certain cases has serious issues at the point that it's unusable.

In my case in 2 different macs it fail, so it's not a isolated problem of one user, it's more than this.

In general I have seen that Preview Windows it's very problematic in Compressor, it looks like very slow.

FCPX and Motion works perfect, the problems is the Compressor.
