Is it ok to use my old ipod power charger with the new ipad (3rd gen)?

It probably won't hurt your iPad, but it won't charge your new iPad very wel if at all. The charger would charge an iPad 2 if it were in sleep mode and very slowly. However, I don't know if that is the case with the new iPad.

You can use your iPod / iPhone charger but as has been mentioned it will take a really long time to charge your iPad.

And there is the possibility that you could harm the charger and the sync / dock cable. The iPad tries to pull the 10 Watts it needs no matter what it is plugged into. This will cause the iPod charger to get very hot. Very very hot.

I have done this in the past in emergency situations. I would plug my iPad in for about 15 minutes at a time and then I would unplug it because the wall charger had gotten so hot I could barely touch it. I would then wait 10 minutes or so for the charger to cool back down before plugging it back in. Doing this for an hour or so I was able to get enough charge on my iPad to check my email.

Also in order to get this to work you have to shut your iPad off or the screen will contiue to drain the battery faster than it can charge. You don't have to turn it all the way off you just have to shut down the screen by pressing the power button one time of closing your smart cover.

Don't use the iPod charger to charge the iPad. It will charge very slowly. However, you can use the iPad charger on an iPhone or iPod, which will charge them faster.

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.

Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.

It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer.
