Trouble pairing apple wireless keyboard to ipad2

I just bought an apple wireless keyboard, model no. A1314, but it will not pair with my iPad2. I am able to select the keyboard under the blue tooth setting but when I type the pass key and hit enter it tells me that the pairing was unsuccessful. I've tried many times and it still doesn't work. I've looked through some most of the other solutions and none of them have worked. I'm beginning to think I just got a malfunctioning keyboard. I've also tried it on other devices with the same result. As of now it is not paired to any device.
