Hi,
Just purchased this great imac.. just looking through the settings... and I am not familiar with standard settings for macs by why would the firewall in the settings be turned off? how is this supposed to be set up? Im confused, didn't touch this issue while setting up computer at store... and I told them I was quite concerned about security..
so what's the scoop?

If you're behind an NAT router, the firewall contributes nothing to your security. Leave it off.
To know if you're behind a router go to
This will be your public IP address, more than likely one assigned by your ISP. Then go to System Preferences>Network>Advanced>TCP/IP and note your IPv4 address. If it is different, then you are behind a NAT router and your system is not directly visible outside. That IP address in Network may begin 192.168.xxx and, if it is, that will certainly indicate you are behind a router. The Firewall is not needed.
