Is there any way to download the whole world's map so that I don't constantly need a 3G connection? If I'm lost in the desert without a 3G, I'm dead and the maps app is useless.

The stock maps app doesn't store any data locally on your phone, none. The stock maps app requires an Internet connection, either WiFi or 3G. Look in the app store for a mapping app that stores data locally on your phone, there are many.
"TomTom Middle East" is in my UK App Store for £69.99.
I'm afraid that everything we want in life is not free. One often has to pay for somebody else's time and effort. You probably expect somebody to pay for yours, so will be familiar with the idea.
Oh well, better to just stick to whatever I can get for free.
