Is there any way to download the whole world's map so that I don't constantly need a 3G connection? If I'm lost in the desert without a 3G, I'm dead and the maps app is useless.

The stock maps app doesn't store any data locally on your phone, none. The stock maps app requires an Internet connection, either WiFi or 3G. Look in the app store for a mapping app that stores data locally on your phone, there are many.

How will I know if a certain application is compatible with the "Maps" application of iPhone? Could you at least link one application which will have the world's map stored and it can be used by the "Maps" application of iPhone?
It would be a separate mapping application & have nothing to do with the stock maps app. Again, the stock maps app does not store any data on your phone.
There are 100's, perhaps thousands of navigation/mapping apps in the app store.
There are many maps but hardly any provide Voice Navigation. That is what I need. It seems iOS 6 will feature voice navigation so I wanted to stick to it if possible but Apple must suck to be unable to retain a map...

Look again. There are many nav apps that provide voice navigation. TomTom and Navigon are two of the most popular.

There are many, you didn't look hard enough...look again. iOS 6.0 won't do you any good, as once again, none of the data will be stored locally on your phone.
There are over 15,000 "map" Apps in the App store.
Take your pick, there is bound to be at least one that will do what you want it to.
Thanks for the names. But these prices should seriously not be so crazy. I'll have to look for something less costly than those 2 without voice I guess.
Mapquest is free and has voice guidance. Google for reviews and other info.
I seriously doubt it. The poster is asking for the entire world's mapping at a level good enough for satnav to be stored in the phone. TomTom's app and mapping for Western Europe occupies 1.8GB of storage. But he wants the whole world!
We're going to need a bigger phone...
In the AU store I searched "map" it came up with that many results for iPhone.
Sorry - I wasn't doubting there are 15000 "Map" applications. I suggest that there is no application which offers the entire world's mapping, downloaded and stored within the iPhone, as required for GPS voice navigation with no internet connection. (And such quantities of data do not come cheap.)

I doubt that there would be such an App also.
If there was it would most likely be prohibitively expensive and large (memory wise).
Waze is free as well and will be included with ios6's mapping system when it comes out. Also you could just wait til iOS6 comes out because it will have turn by turn voice directions built into the phone.
As far as Tom Tom the price isn't that bad. If you go and buy a Tom Tom GPS it cost 4 times as much and you have to pay for map updates. I have had 3 map updates for free since I got Tom Tom for my iphone. I have had it for over 2 years now and am very happy with it.
Only Middle East Map would do. I can't find any "only Middle East Map" for free though.
