Can I replace my Verizon FIOS router with my 2010 Apple Extreme router without any dire consequences?

The FIOS router predicts dire consequences if I use another brand of router....true? Also, the FIOS router has a cable connected to the modem and ofcourse theres no place to do that with the Airport Extreme. Will everything still work OK, ie TV,Landline and internet? My router is Model A1354 circa 2010.

Thanks.

Probably true, since the FIOS "router" is really a gateway....that is it is a combination modem/router in one package.....that is likely custom tailored to the FIOS services.

It would be wise to check with FIOS first on any major changes like you are considering to find out if it is even possible to do this, and if so, will FIOS provide future service and support.

The first issue that you will face is that the AirPort Extreme is only a router. It does not have a modem onboard, so you would need to check FIOS to see if they could offer you a simple modem....not a gateway device like you have.

If you want to use the AirPOrt Extreme in conjunction with the FIOS gateway, you could connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the FIOS product to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Extreme and configure it to create a wireless network while operating in the correct Bridge Mode setting.

Hi, yes, I was able to completely replace ActionTec Verizon Router with "Airport Extreme". Pretty simple process. 1) Make sure your ActionTec is using "Ethernet WAN" and not the "COAX".

2) Then Log on to the the ActionTec router, copy the Promary DNS Serers 1 & 2, make a note.

3) On ActionTec router go to "My Connections" --> Ethernet Connection and Edit, then release the IP address.

4) As soon as you click on the "Release" IP Address, switch off the Verizon ActionTec router.

5) Connect "Airport Extreme" with Ethernet connection to its WAN port

6) Go to the Manual mode once in the Utility and then enter the "Internet"

7) Once in the "Internet" assign the DNS Server 1 & 2 you have noted in the screen.

8) Update and reboot, "Voila" there you go.

9) AE is amazingly smoother and faster than the ActionTec.

The FIOS Router does a few more things for you on your cable-TV box, because it is on the cable-TV cable as well:

Program guide (at the bottom of the screen when you change channels)

Pay-per-View support.

In some networks, it assists in re-loading the software on the cable box from time-to-time.

But the actiontec Router they provide (and maybe some other brands as well) can be combined with Apple Routers to create a Roaming Network:
