Thanks Noodles1000. It worked like a charmed. The same error just happened when I tried to update my apps on my 4S. Glad I found this thread. I thought my 4S went stupid on me.....

As a bit of a Mac newbie , I have had the signin problem on my 2012 Macbook air.
When trying to Logon with my Apple ID to the APP store i get the " An unknown error has occurred "
However Itunes and Icloud have no logon issues
I have tried deleting the Network Preferences PLIST , creating a new account and using that to sign in but no luck, along with all the other ideas in the forum.
My Apple ID logs in using my daughters Macbook on the same wireless network, no problem.
My airport card was water damaged so I am using a Nano Wireless adapter plugged into the USB which shows on my Network list as "USB Ethernet" which may be causing a problem?
I thought I had the problem solved by creating a new Apple ID on the Apple website which I then was able to login to the Appstore on my Macbook Air successfully but when I tried to verify the new account I got as far as the credit card details and then it came up with some thing like "Your request can not be completed at the time . please try again later " and despite " trying again later" no joy...
This is getting totally frustrating so any suggestions would be great., I also tried logging into the account on another Macbook and trying the changing country idea but this did not work , and as I can't sign in to sign out if that makes sense!

it seems that some of the apps have got a module contained in a folder named, “_MASReceipt” this module is located in the programme itself so you will have to look for it inside the app.
apparently this is the cause of all this mess, when you intend to login the appstore the module closes the connection thats why in some computers the appstore works and some others it doesnt.

Quit and restart AppStore, then find the application you want to update. The button should now say "Free" or "Install" instead of "Update". Clicking it will update your app to the latest version, doing so as the currently logged-in Apple user.

What worked for me was I signed out of app store from the featured page and signed back in. it was that easy
Repair Disk Permissions is what fixed it for me. Good luck!

This absolutely worked for me- I tried everything else suggested for over an hour and restarted my computer numerous times-- This answer was the key- thank you sooooo much. I was really getting aggrevated. Thank God for the Apple community and people like you guys who try to help - Heaven forbid you wait on the so called "Genuis" that work for Apple. Grrrrrr

When you DELETE the plist file YOU HAVE TO RESTART YOUR COMPUTER!!!!!
If you don't reboot your computer there will be no change.

.. this is definately an issue with pushing the request for the End User to accept new changes in Apples' T&C's via OSX. The fix is: Open AppStore, select 'Store' and then 'Signout'. Then select 'Store' but select 'Create Account.', then 'Continue' and tick 'I've Read ...' this will give you the opportunity to 'Accept' the T&C's - 'Cancel' the new registration and log back in with your orignial Apple I.D.

I can't login to the Appstore at all so can't try the T&C trick "Just get the "An unknown error has occurred"...tried everything on this forum but no luck ..any suggestions?

Re: T&C. When you login, one of the options below "AppleID" is "signout". Click that, the fields will empty, then type them in again. I can't believe this simple trick worked. Of course, the plist was dumped previously and the computer restarted. It worked.
If you can't sign in, there is no sign out link to click. That is the problem. When you type your Apple ID and password and click Sign In, An unknown error has occurred appears in red below the Apple ID box.
In my case, even choosing Create Apple ID doesn't do anything at all. I can log in using iTunes or another computer, but I have 19 updates on my main computer and that is the one which doesn't work. Very frustrating.
Quit the Mac App Store.
Launch the program called "Activity Monitor". You'll find it in:
Macintosh HD/Applications/Utilities
A quick way to find it is to click the "Go" menu in the Finder and choose "Utilities" - it's in that folder.
Once it's launched, look for a process called "storeagent". Click once on it to highlight it, then click the red "Quit Process" button at the top left of Activity Monitor's toolbar. When you're then asked "Are you sure you want to quit this process?", click "Force Quit".
Launch the Mac App Store again (a new "storeagent" process will be created). You should now be able to log in to the Mac App Store. This fix has worked for me and others.
