After about 1 year of successfull backing up the iPhone, I have got an message, that iTunes could not back up my iPhone 4s, because "the backup was corrupt or not compatible with the iPhone". Recommendation is to "delete the backup for this iPhone and try again", but I dont know where and how to delete it.
iPhone 4S, iOS 5.1.1, iTunes 10.6.3.25
iTunes>Preferences(under the Edit menu if using Windows)>Devices...your iPhone backups will be listed here. Highlight them, then hit Delete.

In iTunes > Preferences (Windows: Edit > Preferences) > Devices > mark your backup and click the delete button.

For anyone who tried this and it didn't work, I found that taking encyption OFF allowed the system to backup after I had deleted the old backup. Interestingly Itunes still gave the same error message after I deleted the backups as described above, it was the unticking of the encryption that allowed it to work.

II've same problem guys but I'm not computer literate 😕 Where do I find preferences?
On Windows:
iTunes menu > Edit > Preferences... > Devices > your backup here
On Mac:
iTunes > Preferences... > Devices > your backup here
I have the same issue but there is no backups to delete when i follow this instructions
