Using Mountain Lion , and Safari, have repeatedly been denied access to video clip friend have sent, when the 'blocked plugin' error message appears.
Elsewhere on the Communities site, a thread suggested downloading Adobe Flash....but nothing happens when I attempt to do this either.
Has anyone succeeded in circumventing the 'blocked plugin' dilemma?

Where are you downloading Flash from, the correct place is: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

If so, did you actually install it after downloading it?
