What is quicktime error -50?

I have been editing in FCPX on both my Macbook Pro and my iMac. I have been having problems with both when exporting video. At the end it fails and I get an error message. It reads "Quicktime Error: -50". Does anyone else know what this is?

It has happened when exporting both in FCPX, or in compressor, or the share monitor. It does not happen when I'm simply exporting the media, but it almost always happens when I export as any different format. It particularly likes to do this when I "share" to Vimeo.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.4), 4GB RAM, FCPX

This error occurs when there is corrupt or invalid media in your timeline. Check that the codec of all clips in your timeline are recommended for use in FCP X.

Tom (and others),

Mine is now doing this as well. IT usually stops around the 38-45% range. However, I don't understand what you are talking about when mentioning codec and H.264 files. Step by step, how do I figure out which clip is bad?

I uploaded this same movie last week, then only added about 5 clips on the end of it, so not sure why it won't upload now.

Thanks!

You've got several people who suspect their issues issues are caused by one thing or another. And it's an old thread that spans several versions of FCP/

Don't focus on h.264.

It's not a terribly precise error message. You may have only corrupted preference files…or bad renders, or some other clips, a corrupt project…or something else (maybe the site you were uploading to.).

Trash your preferences, using DIgital Rebellion's Preference Manager.

Turn off BG Rendering.

Delete your proeject render files and event render files from the FCP File menu.

If the error message cited a frame number change, in Preferences set Time Display to Frames to locate the clip. Use the replace edit to replace with either a new clip or a new version of the old one.

Russ H,

Thanks for your help. I have tried turning off BG rendering, and changing from time display to frames. First of all, under frames it doesn't say what frame is corrupt. And I've tried sharing to YouTube about 5 times since I read your reply. I also tried sharing to a DVD and the same thing happens.

I uploaded this to YouTube about a week ago, and just added about 5 clips on at the end, so it isn't much different from what I uploaded last week. So why would it be stopping always around 40%?

When I click on 'file', I cannot delete the project render files.

This is so frustrating. Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks!

The frame number would have appeared in the error message.

To delete project render files, select the project in the Project Library. Then go to File>Delete Project Render Files. Then do the same for the event in the Event Library.

The most reliable kind of export is Share>Master File. Try that with a short section marked with in and out points. Do not render before exporting,

I had this problem, I went through deleting things then trying to share putting them back if I still received the error. I had a series of very short clips which I had all together and then increased the speed x20 to create a time lapse effect. I deleted that and the error went away. I did the bit as a separate video at normal speed published to desk top and then pasted it back in to my video, sped up the new single file, bam! Same effect without the error:-)

Thanks to everyone for replying. I took a little bit from each of you and it worked.

First of all, when uploading to YouTube, you are not notified as to which clip is causing the problems. That is why I was so upset. So I tried sharing as a master file, and that is when the clip is specified. You are given a different type of error, but at least it tells you where the problem is.

Change that clip, and try sharing to YouTube. It should work.

If you are new to FCPX, and don't know how to figure out the labelling of the clips, go to preferences, playback, and change from minutes/seconds to frames.

The video I struggled with at first was a slow-mo clip. The 2nd time it was from a GoPro camera. However, both of these clips have worked in the past, so I'm not sure why they didn't the past week.

I had a similar problem. Out of the blue, after using FCPX for almost a year with no problems, I was getting that QuickTime -50 error when trying to share a video to YouTube.

I still don't know exactly what is causing the problem, but Russ helped me solve it in a different thread I posted this past week.

You need to:

1. Turn off Background Rendering (Preferences>Playback>Background Rendering)

2. Delete the video's render files (File>Delete Project Render Files>Delete All Files). Single click on your video from the Project Library so that this option won't be greyed out.

3. Share to a Master File using ProRes compression. A Quicktime file will be created. In my experience, it gets created a lot faster than you'd expect!

4. Upload the Quicktime file of your video to YouTube or Vimeo or wherever you want from your browser.

Hello everyone,

I thought I had to share my experience with this particular error, because I didn't experience it the same way as I read here. I found out you can get this -50 error in compressor by moving the encoded files before it has finished compresing. We compress the same file in 6 different outputs and put them on different folders, so I was moving the finished files without realizing one wasnt done, so after a while compressor gave me the -50 error.

I moved it because finder was showing the thumbnail with the video content, thinking it was done, but it wasn't.

I can't seem to nail this one down. I've followed your advise and turned off background rendering and deleted all render files before encoding and still get this error. Randomely on two different machines in different projects at different % of the encoding. I've never had this issue until I updated to Mavericks and FCP 10.0.9 which I did at the same time, so I don't know which one's causing the issue.

I'm using footage from a point and shoot Canon Powershot ELPH 110HS. The files are mov's using the H.264 codec which I know can have issues. But again, in my previous version of FCP i never had an issue. I'm exporting or "sharing" using the default YouTube Compressor file with a slight modification of encoding it as a MP4 to reduse file size more.

Since it appears to happen at certain points in the render I assume it has something to do with something in the timeline. But it's always the same type of footage with no effects or additional items added. Not sure if the footage itself could be causing it depending on what's actually there such as fast moving motion or super bright/dark footage.

Thoughts?

There are a variety of proposed fixes in this thread – because it spans a lot of FCP and OS versions and differnt user issues.

SInce you're recently getting this error on Mavericks, I'd suggest you go into Applications and right click on the Final Cut Pro app file. Choose Get Info and check the Prevent App Nap box.

Checking the 'Prevent App Nap' Box DID NOT fix it, however when I changed the file format under Export settings to Quicktime general movieformat it passed through successfully. It made a H.264 file estimated size four times larger but I didn't care... I think, when you try to get mp4 there are buggy software screwing you up, especially when it was set to H.264 and you try to export to Youtube or standard HD formats. None of those formats worked, but .mov Quicktime format worked at least in my case. So, this is not a real fix, just a work around the buggyware...
