what is the difference between Staff and wheel groups?

What is the difference between wheel and staff groups. I notice that older systems have wheel and Mountain Lion has staff. Lion probablly has staff too but I never really looked and now I'm using M Lion. the reason I'm asking is because I migrated my account from My G5 to my Mini 2011. and there seems to be a discrepancy within some of the files in my Library folder in my user account.

OK this is the problem I'm having. Adobe's Bridge CS6 is not working for me on My Mini 2011. It seems to have something to do with my migration of my account from my G5.

Someone with a similar problem said they changed the home user folder to staff and read write permissions. This seems a little drastic. If I can narrow it down to a specific folder I'm guessing its the Adobe folder in user Library folder. When I do a get info on the folder it shows Me - read write, fetching - read only, and everyone - read only.

What is fetching? does this mean there is a conflict? do I need to go into the terminal to change this?

Your user account was migrated from an early version of OS X and needs to be modified slightly.

Open the Users & Groups preference pane in System Preferences. If the lock icon is closed, click it and authenticate with your administrator name and password.

Right-click or control-click the entry for your account in the user list, and select Advanced Options... from the popup menu. In the sheet that opens, change the value of Group to "staff". Click OK to save your changes, then close System Preferences.

The procedure below will reset the permissions of a user's home folder in OS X 10.7.4 or later, including 10.8 or later. If you're running an earlier version of 10.7, update to the latest version first. This procedure should not be used under OS X versions older than 10.7.4.

Back up all data before you begin.

Step 1

Click the Finder icon in the Dock. A Finder window will open.

Step 2

Press the following key combinations, in the order given:

Command-3
Shift-command-H
Command-I (the letter "I" as in "Info.")

The Info window of your home folder will open.

Step 3

Click the lock icon in the lower right corner and authenticate with the name and login password of an administrator on the system. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Step 4

In the Sharing & Permissions section of the window, verify that you have "Read & Write" privileges. If not, use the "+" and "-" buttons in the lower left corner to make the necessary changes.

Step 5

By default, the groups "staff" and "everyone" have "Read Only" privileges. With those settings, the files at the top level of your home folder will be readable by other local users. You can change the privileges to "No Access" if you wish, but then your Public and Drop Box folders will be inaccessible to others. Most likely, you don't need to change these settings.

Step 6

If there are entries in the Sharing & Permissions list for users or groups other than "me," "staff," and "everyone," delete them.

Step 7

Click the gear icon at the bottom of the Info window and select Apply to enclosed items... from the drop-down menu. Confirm. The operation may take several minutes to complete. When it does, close the Info window.

ok when I go into my home folders there are still other folders and items that show this fetching group. some of these folders are Adobe folders. The reason I ask is that Bridge will still not start. It was working till the ML upgrade. I'm wondering if this fetching group is messing things up? should I also delete these fetching groups?

Back up all data if you haven’t already done so. Before proceeding, you must be sure you can restore your system to the state it’s in now.

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.

Triple-click the line below to select it, then drag or copy into the Terminal window — do not type — and press return:

sudo chown -R $UID:20 ~

You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command.

The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.

Hi LD

I can see you have good knowledge about all this.

I have some similar questions if thats alright ?

I did what you told Buko1 here about the user/home folder.

But i can see my main library also have a lot of different info's like

user (me)

system

wheel

everyone

Is that right ? I did mess around with all this because i clone one iMac to another and the disc was bad

so i had to install the fresh new HD that was in the new iMac and then i used the Migration Assistant app

to clone/copy everything over from the backup disc i had from the old iMac.

It did work, kind of. Most of my applications are working but i do think some funny things happen sometimes.

Like i have many new system.log errors ? So i was wondering if that user/info thing could mess up things like that in my main library ?

I have a new system.log like this one here all the time:
