Software Update not working in Mountain Lion

I have a MacBook Pro 13" (Mid 2010), running OSX 10.8.1

Since updating to Mountain Lion, Software Update (now running through AppStore) times-out without finding any updates. The only way I can update my machine is to go online and download Apple updates manually. I had hoped 10.8.1 would resolve this but it hasn't. Who else is having this problem and what solutions are out there?

I have noticed some threads suggesting it may be a wi-fi issue, so I tried connecting directly via ethernet - no luck.

What is preventing my laptop from connecting to the Software Update / AppStore servers?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion, iPhone 3Gs OS 5.1.1; Ipad 2

Its really strange how this is happening,

On mine, I have tried it in different user, repaired permissions, put in new hard drive and migrated data, deleted plists, done the terminal stuff, but just realised that the top library software update plist says this

bplist00‘ _ LastUpdatesAvailable_ LastRecommendedUpdatesAvailable_ RecommendedUpdates^LastResultCode † d (J_npq s

Im also getting the failed Java SE 6 Runtime aswell. Can anyone else shed any light on what could be done?

Thanks

I am having Similar issues, however I am traveling abroad and not sure if the services are being blocked based upon the region of the IP I am coming off of. I am attempting a direct software down load from the app store were there are updates posted just not automated to download. I recomend giving that a shot.

I got this message today for a generalized software update and couldn't get past it. Then I clicked the arrow to show the individual updates that were included, and was successful downloading them separately.

During the update I did get the normal message that software that was being updated needed to be closed - so it's possible this was hanging me up - the software update may not have handled this correctly. If you're like me, the software is probably running on my kids' accounts, and the only two ways I know to shut them down are (1) to restart the computer before running the software update, or (2) use Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder to close the tasks running under other users' accounts.

I had the app store cannot connect to the internet problem when running software update on one of our Mountain Lion macs.

I tried everything listed here and also any other fixes I could find. Nothing worked.

Itunes store also displayed incorrectly, just text and pictures, similar to like a corrupt web page.

Logging in as a different user didn't work either.

Other mountain lion macs in the office were OK, so I knew it wasn't a network or router problem.

I tried reinstalling the system - didn't work.

I tried erase and reinstall the system from time machine - didn't work.

Unfortunatly what worked was this - a total start from scratch:

Carbon copy clone the user folder to an external disk.

Erase the mac's disk.

Reinstall mountain lion from usb stick. (you can make one using LionDiskMaker)

Reinstall all software.

Copy user files back to the new user folder.

(Annoying part is that mail folder is hidden in the hidden user library folder - so have to watch out for that and maybe other apps that store all their data in the hidden library folder.)

Doing the above, which did work, took me 3 hours 15 minutes.

Trying to trouble shoot and trying out all the other 'fixes' took 4 hours and didn't. So, in my case, it would have been quicker to just start from scratch at the outset.

I had this same problem with Software Update via the App Store not finding any of the new updates that I knew existed. I am running ML 10.8.3. After trying various things listed in this thread and elsewhere, none of which worked, I downloaded and installed the 10.8.3 Combo Updater. This solved my problem and Software Updates are now working again.

So .... I downloaded the 10.8.3 Combo Updater, and have made SOME progress - I do not get the error message after the timeout now, but it still times out eventually. The first time I ran it, the Software update spotted the Java update that was available and installed it before again timing out. The second time I ran Update, it found the Aperture update before timing out and I was able to install it.

Subsequently, it found no more updates even though the iPhoto update was available. I had to download this manually from the support website and install it that way.

Not perfect, but a small improvement. I really do not want to have to do all of what Callum did (above)! There must be a reason behind all this. As with Callum, I don't think it is a router problem as it all worked fine before the first Mountain Lion install.
