Cant print since updating to 10.8.

I have a Canon MF8350 CDN. I was on the phone with Canon tech support for 2 hours and they couldn't help. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Okay, with the UFR2 Backgrounder running I would open Print & Scan and add the printer again. But don't select the MF from the Nearby Printers view after you click the plus button to add. Instead select "Add Printer or Scanner" and then select the MF8300C Series from the Default Add Printer view. This should change the Use section to the correct driver and then click Add.

Then, before you print anything, open System Information again and select the Printers > MP8300C and check the URI. It should show;

cnbmzd://localhost:59693

If it does not show the same then it is not going to print and we need to try something else.

Make sure when you set update the drivers and get the mac setup (but before you try to print a test page) you reboot the mac. I was having the same issue as you (I have a Canon MF4350d) where the mac said it couldn't communicate or the printer wasn't supported. As I was investigating drivers, I believe with the Gutenprint info that part of the drivers are created when you first use the printer, but that a reboot was necessary to reset some part of the process. PAHU gave me the part I was missing with the info about the print queue. Mine looks a little different than PAHU's, possibly because the US and UK drivers are slightly different.

Here what mine ended up with now that both printing and scanning are working.

I am having a similar problem. I have a Canon Imageclass MF8380Cdw printer. It was working fine on my old iMac running 10.6 but we just bought a new iMac running 10.8 and I cannot print.

I downloaded the newest driver from Canon, and added the printer from scratch (several times), but I get a cmjcinitialize error every time I try to print.

Here is how the connection to my MF looks:

The one thing that looks off is the URI, but I can't figure out how to fix that. Also, UFR2 Backrounder does not show up in the Activity Monitor.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thank you.

You are correct about the URI being incorrect. And the cause of this will be due to the Backgrounder process not running.

So right now this print queue is not going to work, so open Print & Scan and remove it.

Then open Finder and select Go > Go to Folder. Then type in

/Library/Printers/Canon/UFR2/Utilities

and press Go.

Here you will see the UFR II Backgrounder file. Double-click this file. Nothing will appear on the screen, but if you check Activity Monitor you should now see the process in the list.

One other thing. There is two parts to the UFR2 driver. If you use Finder's Go To Folder function again, but this time type

/Library/Printers/Canon

and press Go you will also see a CUPSCMFP folder. You can see in the information that you posted that the CUPS filters used for the MF8xxx series reside in the folder. And like the UFR2 driver, there is a CMFP Backgrounder process that resides in /Library/Printers/Canon/CUPSCMFP/BackGrounder. So I recommend you check via Activity Monitor if you have this process and if not, double-click the CMFP Backgrounder in /Library/Printers/Canon/CUPSCMFP/BackGrounder.

Once you see both processes in Activity Monitor, then add the MF8380 in Print & Scan and see if you can print.

Thank you, PAHU, for your reply. I did as you directed. The UFR II Backrounder file was where you specified, and I double-clicked, but it did not appear in the activity monitor. The CMFP Backrounder was also where you specified, but it also did not appear in the activity monitor when double-clicked. Any ideas how to proceed? Thank you.

It is rather unusual that neither Backgrounder will open. To check for possible causes, open the Console application (Applications > Utilities) and select All Messages in the left column. Note that you may have to press the Show Log List button to see the left column. Do you see any messages about either Backgrounder process? If not, leave Console open and double-click the UFR2 Backgrounder. Is there any entry in Console now?

Feb 8, 2013 7:50 AM in response to PAHU

Thanks, PAHU. I checked the Console and found the following:

I'm beginning to fear that the Canon driver does not work with the new iMac 27 I purchased which is running 10.8.2. I am going to call Canon this a.m. to see if they have had other reports like this. I will post what I find out. Thanks for all your assistance! You have taught me a great deal!

Good news! The problem is solved.

I spent time this am with Canon tech support, but they didn't help. I then tried Apple. What seemed to do the trick was to reset the printing system. (For others in the same boat, here is info on how to do this: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1341?viewlocale=en_us&locale=en_us )

Once the reset was done, I added my printer again using the plain old Canon MF8300C Series (US) driver and it worked. And the URI now reads correctly:

Canon MF8300C Series:

Status: Idle

Print Server: Local

Driver Version: 2.0

Default: Yes

Shared: No

The two backrounders are also working correctly (showing up in the Activity Monitor and no longer showing error messages in the console).

Thanks again, PAHU, for all your assistance.

This "printer reset" procedure solved my problem also! I was getting this error message:

May not have been able to get the printer information.

If the contents in the [Printer Information] dialog differs from the actual printer configuration, check that the printer is functioning correctly, then try again to get the printer information.

Trying to print to a Canon MF 4370dn, OS 10.8.5

Cant print since updating to 10.8.
