Chat applet won't load in Yahoo

Whenever I try to enter a Yahoo chat room it only loads the tools and the rest of the page stays blank with the message 'loading chat applet'.
I leave it run for hours and it never loads the chat room.
What can the problem be?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.4.4), First time MAC owner.

Yahoo! Chat Help says that if you are behind a firewall you could have trouble using Yahoo! Chat. Check with your administrator or firewall software maker for help.

I have no problems using Netscape 7.0 for Mac OSX. It's a little clunky, but at least it loads Yahoo Chat.

Well, not anymore my friend. Yahoo Chat it's no longer Java, and, yes, it's only for PC users as a the Yahoo Messenger add on.
