Chat applet won't load in Yahoo

Chat applet won't load in Yahoo

Whenever I try to enter a Yahoo chat room it only loads the tools and the rest of the page stays blank with the message 'loading chat applet'.
I leave it run for hours and it never loads the chat room.
What can the problem be?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.4.4), First time MAC owner.

Yahoo! Chat Help says that if you are behind a firewall you could have trouble using Yahoo! Chat. Check with your administrator or firewall software maker for help.

If you're using Safari, forget it, Yahoo Chat doesn't work with Safari.
Firefox, well, works, in a strange way, not to stable.
The best choice, even when is not a happy one, is Charla. The unhappiness is because there's not a new version since a long time ago, so, it's not heaven.

Thanks so very much for your reply. I am really disappointed about that, because all my family and friends have windows and now I can't converse with them.
I actually downloaded Firefox, but it still doesn't load Yahoo chat either. It gets a bit closer than Safari but just doesn't get there. What could be the problem with Firefox that I am having. I would rather have it in a strange and unstable way than not at all.
Is there any other way other than 'Charla'. Is Charla a browser? Can I just download it from the internet? How come Charla is not a happy one?
Is it safe??

I would be grateful if you could please let me know!

Oh...maybe I should have just bought a Windows machine!!??!!
Have I done the wrong thing? Oh well..it's too late now.

You can get Charla here, give the application a try.
Charla is safe, my "not a happy one" interpretation means it's not the 100% solution, but so far is the better. It's a Chat browser, only to visit Yahoo Chat Rooms.
The Firefox problem, like the Safari one, it's a Java error. There used to be a plugin to fix that, but it's included in the last Firefox version now.
And about your last question. There's a lot of chat rooms around, not Yahoo with its old Windows codecs, but you've got to make a search in the web to find the better place for you.

Thanks for your message. I checked the Charla link you sent me....but I am too scared to download it. I havn't had much luck with downloading stuff on this computer, the process never runs smoothly and seems quite coomplicated. I need help!!!!!
I wish I personally knew some one who can work a MAC.
I need some MAC training because I am not sure if I am doing the right thing. I wish I could explain it to you but it's pretty complicated. I don't know exactly how to explain what is happening.
If you feel like trying to interpret my explanations and have the time, let me know and I will do my best. If not thats OK.

Ask. But one problem at a time. Now my question. What browser are you using? Answer that and I'll will give you the directions for a good download and installation.
A good start for the rest of your "Mac fears" is to check the Help Viewer in your computer. Go there using the Help in the top bar of the Mac main window.

I have tried the browsers, Safari, Firefox and an old version of Interent Explorer and none of them will load the chat applet.

I have gone to the Charla site (that you told me about) to download it.
But when I click dowload at:
http://charla.sourceforge.net/

it then takes me here:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/charla/Charla_Aug19.dmg?download

it then asks me to select a mirror and I don't know which one to click on
(What is a mirror?)

Do you know which one I need to select?
I live in Australia.

Mirrors are different places where the files to be downloaded are.
Sourceforge is a wide and well known group of developers, almost all of them working on free and "open source" applications.
If you have many mirror choices the best is always the nearer to your home location, I tell you this because most of the times the name of the city is close to the file to be downloaded. The Charla from August 19 is ok, it's the last version.
I hope, with this directions you'll be fast enough online on Yahoo Chats.

Yahoo is no longer supporting Java Chat Rooms, for Windows users they're making some kind of mix between chat and Yahoo Messenger. For us, humble Mac users, time will tell...
