App updates won't install

For about the last two weeks, attempts to update apps have failed. An update will start to install, but apparently does not finish. I first tried to update while I was on vacation and thought the issue might be a sporadic wireless connection, but even now that I'm home with a secure connection the updates will not install, and there are more now than when I started. Is there a fix that will not wipe out all my data?
