capturing HDV on Sony HDR-FX1 FCP 7

I am having issues logging and capturing video from my HDR-FX1 to FCP 7. I am trying to run this through a 4 to 9 pin firewire cable. I know it isn't the cable because I use the same cable for my SD mini DV camera and it works just fine. Unfortunately the SD mini DV camera cannot play HD video.

As of right now it is telling me that it is unable to initialize video deck. It has also at some points (as I change my Capture settings). I have read a few support discussions and have followed their instructions but it hasn't been helping.

My current setting on the camera are:

  • iLink Off
  • VCR HDV/DC: Set to HDV
  • Component: 1080i but that shouldn't make a difference as I am not using component cables
  • A/V-- DV Out: Set to On
  • I put in a new tape and recorded on the mini DV tape using the HDV setting just to ensure that there wasn't a different format on the tape that was presenting an issue

As for the Capture setting: I have tried all sorts of combinations.

  • Generic Template and non-controllable device
  • to trying to edit my own presets
  • Easy Setup--> Format: HD--> Use: 1080i50

If anyone has any other tips (besides get a new camera) please let me know.

Thank you,

J Marc

and fcp can be a little fussy so sometimes it's a good idea to have the hdv device on and playing out hdv when you go to log and capture. Also, make sure you have the correct easy setup chosen (it sounds like you do). I've seen occasions where all the individual settings seem to be correct, but it's only when the correct easy setup is chosen that log and capture works properly.

Camera settings;

A/V- - DV OUT should be set to OFF. Only set this to ON if using camera in passthrough mode i.e. using camera to convert external analogue signal to DV.

You say you have iLink set to OFF. If this is the same as " iLink Conv " as on other Sony cameras then yes this should be set to OFF. When set to ON camera will convert your HDV to DV out to Firewire which is not what you want on this occasion.
