Upgrade from Lion Server to ML 10.8.1 Broke Mail server!

....10.8.1 OD seems to work, files and AFP available, but Mail server not working correctly. Now users don't see mail, postfix issues numerous errors about missing system_user_maps and delivers no mail? Must recover mails! Help! Where should I look, and what to read for Diagnosis ?

After upgrade in place from SL to Lion to ML. most services did not work correctly; except for Mail and DNS and OD. Reinstalled. Now most everything seems to work including Card Services, Calendars, Wiki, Web, DNS, OD. But Mail is off and missing??? No delivery of INcoming mail, No Sending Mail, no IMAP Mail login for users.

On Mail configuration in Server.App: Turned off All Filtering. Have rebooted Server several times, Restarted Mailserver from Server, app and Terninal. Same Results. Somewhere along the line from Server 10.5 to SL to Lion to 10.8 incoming Maill started going to user@PLG1.plg-law.com rather than simply user@plg-law.com.

Is it possible that virtual domains are fuzzing up the works? The error logs use the longer virtual domain (with the sevrer name prefix) rather than the domain name?

Here are some sample Log messages:

I Have also saved my amended Main.cf file, and am trying this approach:

Copy main.cf.default~orig to main.cf by issuing the following in terminal (on one line):

sudo cp /Library/Server/Mail/Config/postfix/main.cf.default~orig /Library/Server/Mail/Config/postfix/main.cf

Restart postfix afterwards:

sudo postfix reload

Start up the server app and start with new mail server settings.

Hmm This doesn't look good. Here is the first Data location for active mail:

plg1:~ plgadmin$ ls -l /Library/Server/Mail/Data/mail/

total 0

drwx------ 14 _dovecot mail 476 Sep 6 15:49 6DF3D410-E344-48D3-BA7B-4CF651E20879

drwx------ 13 _dovecot mail 442 Sep 6 15:47 8FED73FE-432F-4BC4-B8B0-A62D40363CCF

drwx------ 9 _dovecot mail 306 Sep 6 15:44 C54D3A22-7E74-4F2B-BC19-3B7CEEB3B303

And Here is the Migration Folder:

drwx------ 14 _dovecot mail 476 Sep 6 15:49 6DF3D410-E344-48D3-BA7B-4CF651E20879

drwx------ 13 _dovecot mail 442 Sep 6 15:47 8FED73FE-432F-4BC4-B8B0-A62D40363CCF

drwx------ 9 _dovecot mail 306 Sep 6 15:44 C54D3A22-7E74-4F2B-BC19-3B7CEEB3B303

If hate to go backwards if all the services are now working correctly. I have a backup from last week that should have the mail databases intact. Can certain directories or files simply be restored from that backup and the correctly configure mail sver restarted? Or is it better to go to the backup remigrate and fix config files?

Thanks for your help and ideas. Brian

did you compare to sizes of the two mail folders?

it make sense if the migration folder was never copied over to /Library/Server/Mail/Data/mail/

then it would recreate new folders for the users which are empty or near empty if it accepted new email...

all you would have to do is copy over the contents of /mail from migration folder to Library/Server/Mail/Data/mail/

but you will lose any new accepted mails....

Hay Kong: Well that Caveat (losing some accepted new mail) is small potatoes compared to not having 40k mail items in folders!

You have been so helpful, but can I rely on you for some more directIon?

I think the Mail Data is in TimeMachine backups from August 31st. But Never having used TimeMachine for a Restore I have some more technical questions on reaching and selecting system files in TimeMachine:

1. How do I show hidden System Files in TimeMachine Application?

2. I have tried to use this command: defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE;killall Finder

3. If That works, Where do I drill down to reach the Bcakups of the /Library/Server/Mail/Data/mail FOlder? in /etc?

4. Will all of the items in the ?Data/mail driecvtory be everything to restore?

Thanks, Brian

Hay: Well because the /Previous location has the same limited mail files that are in my current location, I can't restore from there....Don't know why the Mail Data is missing from there too!.

So a TimeMachine backup is the next most recent location to find Mail Data files.

Tinker tool did help show hidden files, but I am still a little lost. WHERE to I drill down to reach the correct Library/Server Mail/Data location in TimeMachine Interface.

If I start at the SERVER HD, were wo I cliekc next to reach this location ?

Thanks, Brian

hmmm mail missing from the Previous folder? Weird. hmmmm have you checked it with root account just to make sure since with a regular admin user you not able to accurate check the size of that folder since admins are not able to read that folder too. I just want to cover that possiblity.

Anyway if indeed missing yeah you can drill down through time machine.app /Harddrive/Library/Server/Mail/Data/mail and select a data and time...

Yep. Just checked with the Root Account. Only three small files in Data Folder. Nothing different in the Previous System Folder. All have a Septmber 5th date stamp. The day AFTER i first upgraded from ML.

Now looking for most recent copy of Data Folder in TimeMachine.

Thanks. Hoping this restore will at least put the Mail folders back where they were on August 29th.

Wait: Maybe my knowledge deficiency has led me to the wrong conclusion that the Mail Data was missing. It appears the Onwer of the Data is _dovecot, so the three items in current Data folder are really folders not files. I can't even see the size. Here is snapshot:

User uploaded file

But here is TimeMachine Copy prior to MIgration:

User uploaded file

If that's the case is the still a permissions/Rights issue and not missing data?
