authorization

I go: User/Me/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Movies/Movie Name/HD Movie Name.m4v

I drag HD Movie Name.m4v to the Quicktime Player Icon in my Dock.

I am then asked to AUTHORIZE the movie to be played on MY computer, even though I play it ALL THE TIME in iTunes on MY computer. I am given a window to authorize playing the movie file from my apple account with my stupid deleted secondary email address ID.

This window picks up the second email address for my Apple ID, not the main email address for my iTunes account. I have deleted this second email address and only have one main email address for my iTunes Account ID.

Why is this stupid authorization window picking up a second email account and not my main original?

I cannot play the movie I paid $20 to Apple to own & downloaded from Apple in Quicktime as yet.

I do not want to always play the movie in iTunes, I want Quicktime to play the movie as well.

How do I get around this stupid authorization bug?

I don't remember when this issue resolved itself. I was running Snow Leopard at the time. I have since moved to Mountain Lion OSX10.8.3 today. I moved to Mountain Lion a couple of months ago. Today, I can drag and drop any movie, whether HD or not and play on my Quicktime App in my Dock. So the issue has resolved itself in either SL or ML, but when and why I do not remember. Sorry.

Hi Everyone, here is what I found:

Ever since FrontRow went bye-bye, I've played all my movies in Quicktime. It seemed that every time I did some sort of upgrade (that updated iTunes) I would lose the ability to play my (iTunes DRM protected) movies in Quicktime. I never really knew what would happen, or what I would change, but eventually my iMac would comply and play my movies outside of iTunes, and back in Quicktime.

Last week, I installed my software updates, and, along with the new red iTunes icon, I lost the ability to play my movies in Quicktime. I would get the "Quicktime Player is not authorized to play ...." After hours of grinding my teeth, and some yelling at my screen, I went to disk Utility, and selected "Repair Permissions." (Now I know many posts say not to do this, but I use it as a first step when I have problems. Maybe I am missing why they say not to do this, but it has helped me, and has never hurt me.) Anyway, immediately before I did the repair, I could not not open ANY iTunes .m4v movie with Quicktime, and immediately after the repair, I could play any iTunes .m4v move with Quicktime.

I'm just putting it out there that it worked for me.

A side note: Quicktime will not play a iTunes (HD) movie if you are still running Snow Leopard. There is an update to Quicktime that allows the playback of iTunes (HD) movies, but that version of Quicktime will not run on Snow Leopard. I am not sure if it will run on Lion or Mountain Lion, as my MacBook runs Snow Leopard, and my iMac is on Mavericks.

I have since been trying to narrow down exactly what I do to "trip" the Quicktime error. I have yet to pinpoint it, but the fix is the same. Something changes, and I try to play content purchased through iTunes using Quicktime, I will get the error that Quicktime is not authorized.... Using Disk Utility, I will Repair Permissions, then restart the computer (neither the repair, nor the restart, will correct the error by itself). This is consistent, at least on my machine. So here are the three items that always need repair, and the repair. Maybe someone who already understands permissions can shed some light on what the permission differences are?

Error: "Quicktime [Version 10.3 (727.4)] not authorized to play...." I use Disk utility [Version 13 (517)] to repair permissions, then I restart the computer [OSX Version 10.9.5], and Quicktime happily plays my iTunes content.

hello

original post mentions that is probably an authorization issue.

but not enough info is given to help.

it is clear that each device needs to be authorized to play for each apple ID that might be used to purchase content.

a device can change the apple ID it is associated with every 90 days.

it may be that the original apple ID that he used to purchase that content is in fact not the apple ID that is associated with that device currently.

but i think its not an authorization issue since he reports he can play it ok using iTunes. but it requests an authorization using Quick Time.

therefore, the other issue (beyond authorizations) that may be related is 32 bit vs. 64 bit content.

with effect from Mavericks (and therefore of course Yosemite) all iTunes content has been converted to 64 bit files (as long as it is contained in the iTunes media library).

before Mavericks there were several operating systems is which you needed to manually change the setting of the Quick Time file in order for it to played outside of iTunes.

this setting however no longer appears in the Get Info for any iTunes media file (from Yosemite onwards).

thanks
