Logitech MX518 mouse supported in OS X?

Their web site does not seem to carry Mac software. I appreciate it will no doubt work as a two-button mouse but will I be able to configure the other buttons without the Logitech software?

Thanks

iMac G5 1.8Ghz, Mac OS X (10.4.5), 1.25GB RAM

As a follow-up to the above, I thought I'd report back with a little update.

Whilst still using my trusty Kensington, I tried out both USB Overdrive and Steermouse. They're very similar though the UI for the latter is a little friendlier. I'd read that the latter worked fully with the MX518 mouse whereas USBOverdrive seemed to have issues with it, so settled with Steermouse.

I finally got the mouse yesterday (Amazon UK took a while to ship this) and so far so good. Its looks are a matter of taste I suppose, but it seems to work well and all the buttons work and are configurable with the Steermouse drivers. Just as well, since Logitech don't seem anywhere near as Mac-friendly as Kensington!

Hi, Norliss.

If you mean the "Logitech® MX™518 Gaming-Grade™ Optical Mouse," that mouse is specifically designed for Windows. While USB Overdrive, as Kappy suggested, may help, it's technically the wrong mouse to use on a Mac.

For Logitech mice that are Mac compatible, one uses Logitech Control Center for configure the mouse.

Good luck!

The MX510 will work with Macs, but lacks the features specific to gamers designed into Logitech's series of Gaming Mice. All those appear to be intended for Windows due to some of the features related to Windows-specific gaming. The "System Requirements" of their Gaming mice are all PC+Windows.

Good luck!

EDIT: OK.

The MX510 and G5 Laser Mouse are completely different products. They look a bit similar, and the MX510 makes claims concerning gaming, but they're completely different. Compare the two pages above.

However, if your point is that the MX510 would be a better mouse for him than the MX518, I could buy into that to the degree that he was not looking for some of the game-specific features found only in the latter.

Good luck!

I think my point was the G5 is the better mouse for him than the MX518. Logitech has three products they list as "gaming mice:" 1. MX518; 2. G5; 3. G7. This is in order from lowest to highest in price and features.

That's why I said I had made an error, that the model he should look at is the G5, not the MX510.

However, that said I also have the MX510 that I'm using on my Quicksilver. I actually prefer it to the G5 for normal usage.

Thanks for your answers, guys.

I did a fair bit of reading about mice over the weekend. Ideally I wanted a good wired mouse. The G5 seemed a bit ott for me as I don't have any gaming in mind.

The MX510 seems to have been discontinued. I've ordered the MX518 (though it hasn't shipped yet) so could be cancelled.

What about "SteerMouse" as mouse drivers for OS X? As good or better than USB overdrive?
