Internal speakers not working with Mountain Lion

Hi

I have MacBook Pro 17" late 2011. After Mountain Lion installation, internal speakers are not working. I can hear soud from speaker during system boot, not n ot in OS. Speaker symbol is grey, not black. Headphones are working fine.

Re-installation, NVRAM clearing, etc. haven't solve the problem. I have discussed with Apple support, but they cannot to help.

I have also tried with OSX Lion, with that one speakers are working perfectly. So it cannot be a hardware problem.

Any ideas?

2009 MBP got this issue. "Internal Speaker" missing in Sound. Default was Digital Output.

I tried SMC reset didnt work. Tried a suggestion for plugging in / removing gently the headphone a few times. it WORKED!

I do plug in and unplug the headphone at least once a day so likely the microswitch inside is starting to worn out. Out well. 2009 till 2013 what can i say.

Hope this is useful info

Offering up my problem, and solution, after scanning the forums :

MacBook Pro 8,3 (17", Late 2011), running OS 10.7.5

Circumstances - while using Final Cut Pro and DVD Studio Pro, alternating between headphones and internal speakers, sound suddenly vanished. On screen icon for volume control showed line-thru-circle superimosed. This loss was system wide.

In System Pref's > Sound, the control panel no longer showed internal speakers as an available option.

After trying a few restarts, prodding headphones mini-plug port (no success) I went for the SMC reset - note that there are differing procedures for different models. As soon as this reset was complete, the Sound control panel again showed internal speakers, and all is good.

Good luck! - Grant.

I had similar problem with Macbook Pro 9,2 (13", mid 2012, Mavericks). After several days of fighting with this issue, after traveling all over the internet searching for solution, reseting PRAM, SMC, removing suspicious programs (as Apowersoft), trying trick with a toothpick, trick with compressed air, "plug and unplug" speakers, and many others, something else helped me out. While pulling the headphones out of the slot, I pressed the volume button on the keyboard. Aaaaand... Boom! It magically helped... 🙂

So after fussing with this overnight, I finally got my internal speakers back. The toothpick, blowing air, putting the headphones in and out did not work. I even tried the magnifying glass and poking around. I tried the VooDoo thing too, but then all my audio options vanished.. so don't do that. I had to delete VooDoo and reinstall Yosemite. I was about to give up then thought.. I have those Stimudents from the dentist. I chewed on it a while, then used that to clean it out - and voila, it came back. Remember that you are doing this at your own risk, but thought I would share..

Man O' Man!.... I love this Apple community and threadsite! I used every bit of advise and techniques, tips and tricks (multiple times). Hardware resets, PRAM reset, back and forth with the wiggling of the jack, playing with the volume controls, the toothpick, blowing out the port with compressed air... you've all shared it and I used it all... What worked for me, one last effort with the.....TOOTHPICK!.. THE TOOTHPICK WINS.... THE TOOTHPICK WINS....THE TOOTHPICK WINS!!!...

Haha, Thanks all, and for anyone experiencing this issue after my "happy, jumping for joy, victory" post, in all seriousness, try every technique multiple times and be patient, it took me way more than 4 or 5 times of each but it finally cleared the "Dreaded Digital Output Debacle!"

This was the solution for me. Many thanks!

Well, I tried everything except going to the apple store. (I had no red light and no Internal speakers option inside the sound settings)

The solution came from pelleindc and BulldoglMac. I believe that as you slowly plug and unplug your headphones while changing volume, the computer gets tricked and sends the volume beep before resetting to Digital out, but after disabling the headphones, right through the built-in speakers.

Finally solved the problem by:

1. Opening iTunes and playing music with headphones plugged in

2. remove headphones meanwhile adjusting volume

3. If it does not work first time try again. I had to do about five tries.

Did a shut down, restart, Onyx permission fix, compressed air, restart...no luck

Did this trick and on the third time, there we go! Woo!

It was amazing. I've been fretting and trying to fiddle with this and that. My output speakers didn't show up in sound preferences or Audio MIDI set-up. I'd tried the in/out of external ear buds before and had the speakers pop back in but this time, that didn't do the trick. Since that had been the only "trick" I'd known about, I was befuddled and after some reboots, safe boots, etc.. I was on the verge of visiting an Apple store but I always think "if they can fix it without tools, I should be able to find the answer on Apple Support Community" and I did!!! Thanks so much. I did the simple "sleep" about 3 times, did a simple "restart" and bingo, speakers showed up and all is well. Thank you again...
