Internal speakers not working with Mountain Lion

Hi

I have MacBook Pro 17" late 2011. After Mountain Lion installation, internal speakers are not working. I can hear soud from speaker during system boot, not n ot in OS. Speaker symbol is grey, not black. Headphones are working fine.

Re-installation, NVRAM clearing, etc. haven't solve the problem. I have discussed with Apple support, but they cannot to help.

I have also tried with OSX Lion, with that one speakers are working perfectly. So it cannot be a hardware problem.

Any ideas?

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 Try resetting your SMC, then go into system preferences>sound>output and select "internal speakers" then try to play something. Let me know if that works 🙂

SMC is reseted several times - no help. Problem is that there is no "internal speakers" option any more under output tab.

Digital out (red light on inside headphone connector) and norman analog out both are working fine.

Try this once more.

Plug the headphone into and out of the headphone port 5 or 6 times gently

to flip the microswitch inside. Sound is stuck in digital mode.

I have tried this also 😟

And as I told before, I have tested my hardware with previous OS, and it works perfectly with it.

This must be some Apple Mountain Lion issue, but Apple is denying it.

You are right. It does not look like an hardware issue. But anything is possible.

MBP is in warranty for 1 year from the date of purchase.

You have to take the MBP to the Apple store as soon as possible.

Let Apple resolve the issue.

Try this, go to utilities, audio MIDI set up, click output tab, on the source drop down menu select built in speakers,

and make sure that setting is highlighted in the lefy colum.

Hi

Yes, this is also tested with no help. My MacBook is purchaced on June 2012, so I have enough warranty left 🙂

But thanks for your answers and tips. I'll post the resolution right after my MBP has visited at service.

Has this issue been resolved yet? I am experiencing the same with an early 2011 MBP running 10.6.8. Issue persists with 10.7.5. The startup chime is heard but when the system is booted the speaker goes from black (working) to grey (unavailable) within a few seconds.

Hi

No, situation is still same. Startup chime is ok but in the system speaker goes black. If I connect external speakers via USB like Polycom CX100, the sound is ok through it.

Strange... Today when I plugged in some Apple headphones the internal speakers DID work while sound did not come out of the earbuds. Upon disconnecting I got the famous stuck red light. Yesterday the headphone jack worked as expected, so this symptom is not consistent.

Maybe a faulty micro switch that hangs, in a weird way, the connectors on the headphone jacks are not precision sized devices, maybe the jack size is off a touch, or deformed the switch a little. Bring to the Apple store and let them deal with this, as it is not an isolayed issue.
