Diagnosing cause of kernel panic on a Mac Pro

I've got an early 2009 Mac Pro with the following specs:

2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon

16 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC

NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512 MB

OS X 10.8.1

Problem is, at random times, my Mac would just shut down and then restart after I clicked through the "gray your Mac shut down without telling you because it's selfish" warning screen.

I took it to a local computer shop and they couldn't really tell, and suggested I do a clean install of Mountain Lion. I did that, got everything back on from Time Machine (just Documents and Music, no Libraries per the technician's instructions), and then last night it did it again. Restarted while I was working on a web site. No notice.

I wondered if someone could help me diagnose the problem or problems(s), since I can't make ANY sense of the sytem report.

Here is the complete system report when the panic occurred. Thanks for ANY help at all you can provide.

@macbitz, yes, here's a link to the Nvidia driver file, dated 3/15. http://www.nvidia.com/object/macosx-cuda-5.0.45-driver.html. Sorry to hear it didn't work for you. I had four monitors running on thursday/friday witout any panics, which was impossible before I installed the new drivers...but I've been on the road a couple days and not sure if the mac pro is still up and running or not.

May 16, 2013 11:04 AM in response to kevloucat

Same exact problem and setup here. Mac pro, 2x gt120's and KPs pointing to NVDAResman. It occurs sometimes multiple times a day, sometimes not for a week, infact here are some dates:

4.16, 4.19, 4.26, 4.30 (single card in use during this span) 5.6, 5.6, 5.6, 5.7, 5.14, 5.16, 5.16, 5.16

I ran it for a week on a single card without a hitch.

a couple notes from my case:

It seems media related for me. Usually if I am playing a video in a browser (safari, firefox tested) or opening a page that might have media (I am not certain if it is alway flash, or if mp4 is also an issue yet) I get a KP. From 5.8 - 5.14 I intentionally avoided all media on this machine and did not have a KP while running two cards.

And it almost seems like the KP only happens when those media files are run from the second card. I have watched videos that should cause a crash on the primary card with no issue, but moved it and had a KP with 30-60 seconds.

Here's are two clips from a console entry:

I just installed the NVIDIA drivers and cuda package to see if it will help me. This is new to 10.8 for me as well.

Has anyone found any other solutions that works besides shelling out more cash?

May 19, 2013 6:01 PM in response to kevloucat

I, too, am experiencing these panics. (it still happening after installing the nvidia drivers 313.01.01f03 (May 13, 2013)

I originally got 3x GT 120 to power 3 displays. I went down to 2x GT 120 where 1 of the GPU will power 2, to make room for a PCIE SSD.

Since Mountain Lion I have been getting these panics seemingly at random. Someones a second panic only a day after the first; sometimes no panics for 2 weeks. But it only seems to be triggered where there is something loaded into the display attach to the secondary GPU.

I have this hypothesis because reading through these forums there were some suspicion aboout 2x GT 120, so I bought a GTX 570 from macvideo and still get these crashes. I went as far as purchasing a GT 620 and replacing the GT 120 altogether, and I still get these panics. I don't it is specific to the GT 120s.

Right now, I witness it happening only on secondary GPUs. My GPUs have only been nVidia brands, so I don't know if this applies to AMD GPUs too or not. I *think* this might be resolved if I were to have only 1 GPU on the primary 16X PCIE that can power 4 display such as the EVGA AMD HD 7950 or the nVidia GTX 680.

I am heading towards on of those 2 GPUs as a possible solution. Users at macrumors who are using these cards to power 3 displays have filled me in that they have not had any panics at all.
