Diagnosing cause of kernel panic on a Mac Pro

This is interesting. on the mac pro I have at home I have a gtx570 installed, but it's only one card. no kernel panics. It is interesting that you are having KPs when you have different model cards installed. I think that should be a very telling clue for those who are in the know.

I have certainly noticed that it only happens at work (2xGT120s) on the secondary card and only when media is present. I know for sure now that it occurs while flash videos are playing (Not all instances where flash was playing, but some). Sometimes I can watch several flash videos on the secondary card without problem, but invariably, if I do receive a KP, it is while some sort of media is playing. This could be youtube, a site with flash adverts, or a flash based game. I am not yet sure if mp4 is causing it for me.

I defintely do not believe this is a flash player problem, because I am fairly certain it is not the only cause.

I will move my second card to the 3rd pci slot to see if I can get it to occur there as well and post an update.

Regarding the request for third party kernel extensions. (I do not see you post on this screen at the moment). The only third party kernel extensions installed on my problem machine is for VirtualBox (and now the v313 nvida drivers). Everything else is very stock.

I installed the May 13 patch and had first post-upgrade KP today, so the new NVIDIA Web Driver is still not solving the issue on my end. I have 3 x GT120 cards running 3 full Cinema Display monitors (no problems for 4 years prior to ML upgrade).

originally but card was on the 3rd 4X PCIE slot, and it was KP, so I know that won't resolve it.

I only moved it to the secondary 8X PCIE when I was troubleshoot by loading up different nvidia 600-series cards. The 600 are 2-lane cards and wouldn't fit in the 4X PCIE because I had a PCIE SSD on the fifth.

I couldn't test non-OEM AMD without the EFI flash, but I heard that nvidia 600 series would work on a mac so that's what I used. I went to BestBuy and bought a 620 and 610 (ones that doesn't need additional PCIe power) becuase I don't have any extra way of doing it. And it still KP without the GT 120 in ANY combination. These were 570 and 620 and 570 and 610.

The KP only happens when I have a second GPU in the 8X PCIE or 4X PCIE, and when I am doing something related to video/media on any display that is connected to the non-primary GPU. Today, the KP happened when I was only using Aperture and web browsing. No videos. But I was doing some cropping and photo editing. Strangely it didn't crash until I was re-submitting a form on Amazon! But I had aperture and a VM on my 3rd monitor (which is powered by that second GPU).

Has anyone gotten the KP when the second GPU is AMD, or when both cards are AMD? I am wondering if this specific only to nvidia or not.

Took the (painful) plunge and ordered the ATI5770. Running three Dell 3007s now on three GT120s. Hoping the ATI plays OK with one GT120 so I can save on ordering another active miniport-DVI adaptor which is expensive and has pretty weak reviews on the Apple store site.

I'll post back in a week or two and let everyone know if this ends the nightmare. I am frustrated to put the money into an older machine like this but I need the computer back after a year of collecting dust.

as long as your displays are 1920 wide or less (1080p), you can get by just fine with third-party ACTIVE Mini DisplayPort to Single-Link DVI adapters made by StarTech or Accell, about US$35.

Agree 100% - I did that and have not looked back since...

jsh111 - I have 3 x 30" Dell monitors and I'm using two of the DVI adpaters off the one new card to run all three monitors - I found the "perceivable" performance to be well above what of what I was experiencing with the old cards.

Just make sure you have good USB power to each of the active adapters. They have to be first in any USB chains so they come up early in the boot sequence.

Once I got past that - no problems at all.

I was just going to plug the power USB into an iPhone USB-outlet plug. That should work if it just needs power and not data from the machine. Unfortunately over the years the USB ports (and audio output port) of the Mac Pro have gotten wonky and I dont have too many spare openings.

All it needs is the power. Give the wonky ones a try.

my 2x GT 120 KP several times yesterday; and I was using Aperture. I had aperture running on the secondary GPU, but the KP wasn't triggered until I was browsing macsales.com. No flash, and no videos.

It didn't crash for 2 days since I re-install the second GT 120 after updating my nvidia GPU. The aperture, and bam KP. It KP within 15-20 mins of Aperture running and doing something else. I moved Apeture to my middle monitor powered by the primary GPU, and no KPs.

I'm trying to remember restrict myself to load only email, text, and non GPU intense windows on the second GPU. Trying not to load any browsers on it too.

I took the plunge and ordered a Sapphire AMD HD 7950 from Amazon after it went through several price drops. Its $434 now.Cheaper than the 5870 on Apple store or macsales!

Several users at macrumors reported this GPU powering 3 displays without any issues. Hope that goes the same for me.

Good part is, I will remove all the other GPU and go with this single GPU solution, so I finally got room for that USB 3.0 HBA for mac.

I've bad a 5770 running with one 120, 4 monitors for a week without a KP. But too early to break out the champagne yet.

Got the Radeon card. Running now with one GT120 connectedt two one monitor and one 5770 connected to two monitors (one dual-dvi one using the Apple active dual-link adaptor).

I'll report on system stability when enough time passes. Initially I was getting some strange peripheral behavior but a PRAM/SMC reset fixed that.

I will say that I am very disappointed with the Active minidisplay-dual DVI adaptor sold by Apple for $100. The monitor has all sorts of strange video effects and needs to be power cycled not infrequently. While far less annoying than total system crashes it still feels like a band-aid solution and Im not thrilled given the cash I just spilled out.

Perhaps I should try putting a second 5770 card in to dtich the dongle? Can a 2009 Mac Pro handle two of those cards plus at GT120?

Unfortunately, no. Only 1 16X double slot in early 2009 release. Good news here. 5770/120 w/4 monitors has been running for a week without a crash.
