Unable to connect by Denon avr-1913 to the internet using my airport as a client to my airport extreme. I would love some direction on how to config the airport to act as an internet connection.

Hello.

I just purchased a new Denon AVR-1913 which as a wired internet connection. I heard that I am able to use my Airport Express to connect to the Airport Extreme network so that I do not have to run a wired connection directly to my tuner. I need a little direction on how to config the network so this would work.

I also have Apple TV that I plugged into the tuner for content. I don't think that would help solve anything, but thought I would mention it.

Thanks in advance for help!

The AirPort Express can be configured as a wireless Ethernet bridge. Apple calls this configuration a ProxySTA. To use the ProxySTA mode, be sure that your Express is running at least 7.3.1 firmware. Once verified, you can enable ProxySTA by going to the Wireless tab within the AirPort Utility and be sure that the following two items are set:

  • Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
  • Allow Ethernet Clients (checked)

(Note: These setting are for AirPort Utility 5.x)

Start by temporarily locating the Express near the AirPort Extreme and performing a Factory Default Reset on the AirPort Express as follows:

Power off the Express and wait a minute

Hold in the reset button on the Express first and keep holding if for an additional 9-10 seconds while you simultaneousl plug the Express back in to power

Release the reset button after the hold period and allow a full minute for the AirPort Express to restart to slow, blinking amber lght

Make sure that the wireless is turned on your Mac

Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utiliity

Select the Express and click Manual Setup

Click the Base Station tab just under the row of icons and assign a device name, device password and adjust Time Zone settings

Click the Wireless tab

Change the Wireless Mode to read Extend a wireless network

Wireless Network Name = Same name as the AirPort Extreme wireless network

Check mark next to Allow Wireless Clients

Wireless Security = Same setting as the AirPort Extreme or WPA/WPA2 Personal

Wireless Password = Same password as the AirPort Extreme network

Verify Password

Click Update and wait a minute for a green light on the Express

Move the Express to the area where it will be needed and connect the Ethernet cable to your audio video receiver and you should be good to go. Of course, the Express will need to be located where it can receive a good signal from the AirPort Extreme

Temporarily, move your laptop near the AV reciever and move the Ethernet cable from the Express to connect to the laptop. Turn off wireless on the laptop and open your Internet browser to see if you can get can an Internet connection.

If you can, the Express is working.

Power off the AV receiver and try the setup again with the connection from the AirPort Express.

What works? The test I suggested, or is the AV receiver now working?

Anything that you can do to minimize distance and obstructions in the wireless signal path will help the connection speed and reliability of the setup.

For example, if the signal must pass through 2 normal sheetrock walls in a home, it will probably lose half of its strength and speed in the process.

When you have things working reliabliy, post back to confirm and mark this thread as solved so that it will help other users with the same question.

Thanks.

Hi Bob,

I took a break from this and now trying again. When I follow the instructions above from moving the Airport Extreme closer to my receiver, I am unable to receive a green light. It continues to blink yellow.

Some points -

- Airport Extreme and Express are in the same room, ~ 5ft from each other

- I have tried the setup above 5 times and get the same result

- After setting up the connections and getting the green light upstairs, I brought the setup downstairs and the connection didnt work when I plugged in the cable for a direct airport to computer connection.

I appreciate any additional help you can provide.
