what "unacceptable characters" in AppleID password?

I tried to change my password to something stronger, but I kept getting the message:

your password contains unacceptable characters

until I gave up and just used letters and numbers. I could not find any information on which characters are "unacceptable" or why. I like to use punctuation and spaces.

Anyone know more about this?

Thanks, Carolyn Samit, for your quick reply.

Your link helps a little, but does not really answer my question. The link suggests using symbols such as [and gives 3 examples]. And indeed I was trying to use symbols, but I got tired of trying to figure out which one(s) were "unacceptable". All I was using were standard printable ASCII characters (and/or spaces).

If Apple is not going to accept certain common characters, they really should tell us which ones!
