Sorry rachaelcude but I've lost track of what your original media is exactly. If you could again post a screen shot of the movie inspector for the original MPEG-4 files that would be great. Ideally you'll want to convert to QuickTime ProRes. There is a batch function in Streamclip in one of the menus. More specifics would depend on the specifics of the original media.
sorry Tom - not quite sure - I selected a file on the timeline - used shift, command R and I got a box with a whole bunch of files, but not in a particular folder marked anything
From someone else I found out how to check the project properties - and it says that rendering is in apple pro res 422...
so I'm not sure what to do
It would help if you posted a screen shot of what you're seeing.
This is what I get.
I only have one image in the High Quality folder. You probably have a lot more. You may see something else if your navigation display is not in column view.

No, this isn't the original MPEG-4 media from iTunes. This is the media in FCP, and it's fine. I'm really confused now, so I'd better step out of it.

In respose to francis154 . Did you say your ram was 4gb? ramp it up to 16 and you will see a big difference, espicially since you are editing in 1080HD. To check that you are indeed optimized try transcoding one of the clips in the events. If the optimised is greyed out that means it is already optimised.
In response to Rachalcude. If you want speed you should be using an external Drive that is either SSD or a Raid0 HD. your go flex is USB 3 but your mac may not be usb 3. You may need to go the firewire 800 or thunderbolt route if you are not USB 3 on the mac.
