VST expansion bay Zip drive fails in my Wallstreet

Would really appreciate some help solving this problem.

G3 Wallstreet is: 266MHz, 256 MB RAM, 4 GB HD, 14" screen.
OS is 9.2.2
This PB functions well with wireless and all apps including DVD player. Apple floppy drive works just fine in the right bay.

However, I cannot get the VST zip drive to work. Have tried both the original VST CD that came with the zip disk drive and a file downloaded from Version Tracker (labeled IomegaWare English 8.6 - 9.X). Both seem to load correctly and put a file in the Control Strip, Control Panels and Extensions. Yet, when I insert the zip drive the PB locks up except that I can move the cursor (cannot open files or open menus).

Suggestions appreciated.

BTW, I also cannot install Acrobat Reader vs. 5. Starts to download the needed files and then hangs.

Robert,

There was a conflict with the loading order of extensions in 9.2.1 which prevented the VST Zip drive from function, but this was resolved with 9.2.2. However, if you have installed IomegaWare, it installs an extension called "FindIt"...drag this guy to the trash; it can cause your problem plus others.

Also check your Extensions Manager; make sure you do not have more than one Zip 100 extension. You may find an Iomega Driver, VST Zip100, or Zip 100; as I recall, the VST driver is just a rebadged Iomega driver (same internal mechanism).

robert,

I just downloaded Acrobat Reader 5.0.5(?) after a few problems with my Wallstreet/9.2.2. The first download stalled at the very last file and just sat there. I tried to download again using the same 700-800K Acrobat Installer icon on my desktop and the download stalled at the very beginning. So I trashed the Installer icon and started fresh at Adobe and got a successful download and install. If necessary, trash any Adobe stuff on your desktop, and try again. The browser should not be a problem since Adobe closes it before starting the multi-megabyte download.

Hi,

Tnx for your response to my request for help.

Unable to find the extension "Findit".

I am using the Iomega software downloaded from VersionTracker, not the files on the VST CD which came with the drive.

Followed your suggestion regarding only a single Iomega extension. So dumped Iomega firewire support, Iomega USB support and Iomega active disk engine. Retained the extension Iomega driver (84k file). Seemed logical.

Kept Iomega drive options control panel and the control strip file. Did restart.
RESULT: when VST drive inserted into the right bay totally froze PB until removed. When removed all is normal.

Next, removed all remaining Iomega files. Restart PB with VST drive inserted.
Able to use mouse to open folders and menus. But of course the VST drive is unable to load any zip disks. It is just a space filler.

Next reloaded all the Iomega files with the zip drive inserted into the right bay. BINGO! It worked normally and I was able to read zip disks.

But when I removed and reinserted the VST zip drive it returned to previous behavior and I was locked out of doing anything except just being able to move the cursor. And the Powerbook won't boot with the zip drive in the bay.
In fact it won't boot with the drive out unless I remove all power. Does this suggest the problem is not an extension conflict since no extension were loaded. Yet extensions must be a problem since when I removed all the Iomega files there was no problem booting.

Your thoughts appreciated.

Let's hold off on Acrobat Reader until the VST issue solved.

Hi Again,

Here is some updated info.

Turns out can reliably turn PB on/off with VST drive installed and it works as expected. All Iomega extensions and control panels loaded.

But I cannot hot swap it. If take it out and then reinsert get PB lock-up. Remove it and all works OK. Reinsert and again lock-up.

Turn off PB, insert VST drive, turn on PB and get normal operation including zip drive. Normal until I try to remove and reinsert.

Does this make sense?

Robert,

All right, let's give the fix used in 9.2.1 to 9.2.2 and see what happens. Go to System Folder > Extensions > find the VST or Iomega extension being used > highlight the extension's name > put a space in front of the name. Close all windows and restart.

Putting a space in front of the name forces it to load first...if you have the conflict, this should resolve it. However, reading some of the posts I have archived, one user said he could not boot with the Zip module present, but once started, he could hot-swap...this is the opposite of your experience.

If the above is no help, you might try this:

- Go to your Control Panels > Extensions Manager and select the MacOS 9.2.2 Base extension set > go up to menu > File > Duplicate > give the duplicate a name like 'test'. You duplicate it since this is a locked set and can't make changes. This will load just Mac extensions. Now go down the list and enable the Zip extension and leave the Base set as is. You can try the Zip extension with the space and without. This is one way to check for a third-party extension conflict.

- If still no luck, go back to your 'test' extension set and just turn everything off but DO enable just the Zip extension and the Apple CD/DVD Driver. See how it behaves with this configuration. If no conflicts or hardware problems, the Zip drive should work just fine.

Back again,

Your suggest was perfect. Placed a space in front of the Iomega Driver extension and rebooted.

Now the VST zip drive functions normally in that it is hot swapable and fully functional.

Interesting to go back to my old zip disks and read the files they contain.
Deals with both work and PB utilities plus more.

Several years ago (1998) a Wallstreet was my main work computer. Later moved to TiPB.
and recently to Al G4 12" and 17" PBs. Plus mini at home. Really left OS 9 far behind as was early OS 10 adaptor.

Recently someone gave me their Wallstreet 266 MHz 14" screen and indicated it was not working. "Destroy the HD and then toss" were the orders. I brought it back to life using parts (memory and 4 GB HD) from another broken Wallstreet. BTW, do you need any Wallstreet parts? Had a Lunent WaveLAN card laying around and it took a full week to get wireless working.

The Wallstreet I salvaged is in very good condition and I just hope the hinges don't let go. Screen is bright and no bad pixels. Even has a decent Apple battery that gives up to two hours of use.

Tnx again for your help. Perhaps tomorrow I'll delve into Acrobat Reader and let you know the results. Need to think about other aps as well.

Hi,

So, for kicks, I tried again to use the Acrobat Reader installer I had previously download - and it did not work. This time it worked prefectly and I have a 20 Mb folder of Acrobat stuff. Assume the 5 extensions can be tossed since they were not loaded and all contain the word carbon. Printing the Read Me file for Acrobat and the instructions for the VST zip drive using the Wallstreet while I write this via my mini.

Curious - could not log on to the Apple forums using my current info. Looks like I'll need to spend some more time learning about wireless and the Wallstreet.

Checked out my back up battery earlier. When new it will hold the PB active, in the speel mode, for four minutes according to Apple. My ** battery dies after exactly 2 minutes. Feel like a doctor giving a health exam as I try to confirm that all is OK.

Read your decline of my offer, but there are things here that will never get used and probably discarded with 6-9 months. Includes extra VST zip drive,
CD drive and could you use the 266 MHz daughter card? Seriously, happy to send at no charge.

Enjoy these particular forums and will likely continue to participate. Dug out MacWorld Mac Secrets by Pogue and Schorr and need to do some serious relearning. Was a time I used ResEdit to mod the finder, but all forgotten.

Take care and thanks

Robert

Robert,

Well, I dragged the 5 CarbonLibs out of the Reader folder and it would not run...message about missing one of the extensions. As I recall, some of the latest 9.x apps often stored extensions in the application folder and only were used when the app was launched. I believe that this Acrobat Reader was "carbonized" so it would run in both 9.x and 10.x.

Thanks again for the offer...let me consider it and will get back to you.

Hello,

OK, tnx for the info about Acrobat reader. I'll leave the folder intact for now since space on the 4 GB HD is not an issue (80% empty). Plan to a few favorites this weekend (Canvas 5 and PageMaker 6.5).

Tonight I preped an emergency start-up zip disk that worked. The Iomega software from VersionTracker is both impressive and useful.

Here is what I suggest. Send you both the extra VST zip drive with two 100 MB zip disks and the 266 MHz card. My thinking goes like this. Obviously you are a great resource and try to help whenever possible those who come to this forum seeking assistance. I assume you don't have a zip drive so getting one would give you that much more ability to help those who don't know how to solve their problems. And you could experiment directly.

Regards the CPU card - 233 to 266 ain't (sp) no big jump. But gaining a MB of L2 cache is. Hopefully you would see a speed jump. The rest of the Wallstreet parts mule along with a floppy drive and CD drive can wait for further developments.

BTW, love using this Wallstreet and the feeling of success at relearning about how it works. Would like to defrag the HD, but don't seem to have the correct software.

Best
Robert

Robert,

If you want to spend $9, you can get a new Norton SystemWorks CD which includes Norton AntiVirus and Norton Utilities (Macs don't need antivirus yet), plus another CD with Quicken 2000. Norton Utilities has a bunch of bundled utilities and probably the best defragmenter called Speed Disk. I used Norton a lot until I moved to 10.x.
