I am using Photoshop Lightroom as my photo manager. My cameras are Canon SLRs.
No problems importing photos to Lightroom, but sometimes I would like to copy directly from the cameras using the finder, but the camera card does not show up as a disk in finder as it does in Windows explorer.
How can I set up the system to make the camera show in finder?

Connect Camera to your Mac switch on the Camera you will see the Camera name in Finder just as mine did.
With finder open, click the finder menu in the upper left, beside the apple. Then click preferences under that menu. On the general tab, you'll see options for displaying items on the desktop. You may also want to look at the sidebar tab.
I have tried all the settings on finder, but nothing seems to help. Also turning the camera on while connected makes no difference.
Any other suggestions? I am running OS X 10.8.1. No problems importing in Lightroom.
With it connected, open a Finder window and select Computer from the Go menu. Does the card show up? It may be something like NONAME.
If not, then it must be communicating with the computer in some other way through its software. Does it have any options on how it talks to the computer?
I think your suggestion about a special comunication is correct. When connecting an Olympus camera, everthing works as axpected.
I´ll start investigating from the camera end.

This seem to be a general problem. I can se and and import picturer when I am using the "image Capture" program on the mac, but not see them in full screen.
Yes, this is another new "feature" in Mtn Lion.
I have a Canon S95 camera.
My Lion Mac Minis show the name of the camera on the left and on the desktop. So did my Ubuntu and Win7 laptops. This late 2012 Mtn Lion mini does not.
I can specify to open Image Capture when the camera is connected. But I.C. is more complex than just using the camera as an external drive in the finder. I have decades of photos organized in subject folders.
This is my 6th major frustration with Mtn Lion. They should've called it "Lame Giraffe" or "Know-it-all Chimp." Mtn Lion tries too hard to think for us, like Microsoft "products" do. They've also removed too many good features, like iDVD.
What would Steve say (RIP)?
I am watching the clock on my return capability at Best Buy. I may yet go for a Lion mini if they have one left, or just go back to Linux.
I have the exact same problem... with OS X Maverick 10.9.2.
My camera is visible only in iPhoto and Lightroom, but not in Finder or Disk Utility. This is realy frustrating for a professional photographer who needs to manage the photos manually and doesn't automatically want to import them into photo editing software!!
